Well music the first thing you want to do is buy a Mathews. Just kidding. I shoot a trufire huracane release and love it to death for target and hunting. As for arrows everybody I hunt and shoot with uses Goldtip xt hunters. I have seen them driven into trees, i beams and the dirt and always come out like new. Check out www.archerytalk.com classifieds. You will see lots of GT for sale. Keep us posted on what you get. KK

Here's all of the Washington Archery Associated shops. http://crispie.com/wsaa/Files/Shops.pdf Some including the one in Puyallup have nice outdoor ranges too!

Club contact information is here. http://crispie.com/wsaa/Files/Clubs.pdf

I'd go with aluminum XX75 shafts with a 3 blade 125 or 145 gr broadhead with vanes. I prefer handheld releases instead of wrist straps. A handheld is always ready to go whereas you have to strap on a wrist strap. Of course, if you like wearing the strap, it is also always ready. For hunting, it is hard to beat a Scott caliber release or a copy of it for a hair trigger. The problem is that they are pretty easy to accidentally shoot! I also like Barnetts. The problem with many releases is durability. Try several before you buy one. Get in the habit of putting your finger behind or beside the trigger as you draw.

Look for equipment with as few parts as possible...that makes for less screws to back out or lose! Light gathering fiber optic sight pins will help in low light conditions.

Concentrate on making each shot count. Pracice like you'd hunt. Aim, Aim, Aim. Make some targets out of paper that are all the same color but the shape of a deer and don't put a bullseye on them! I can assure you that a deer won't have a clear aiming point marked! Shoot one arrow and go pull your arrow. It is critical that each shot count. Think about each part of the shot and develop a mental checklist that you always follow so you can repeat your shot. It is harder to develop bad habits if you shoot them one at a time.

Once you have marked yardage down, consider shooting local 3-D shoots. Don't worry about the score, practice for hunting.

If you have specific questions/choices, I'll try to help.

After reading this, I thought about doing a board auction private lesson, but the logistics are probably more than I can handle since I don't shoot much any more! After all, we'd have to meet up at a range. I'm sure most of the shops will do a pretty good job setting you up.

Sounds good Ron, gotta get some arrows and a release. The draws a little short so need to have that setup also. Not sure of all the ins and outs yet. Did shoot it though inthe back yard to see how hard it was to draw. Pretty easy at 60lbs. Finger releasing wasn't too pleasant though. Sportsmans is just down the road from me about 10 miles or so. I'll pm you when i'm loaded for bear...thanks for the invite..looking forward to it already. PS, did kill a tree with my second shot. HAHA

Pin settings are pretty personal.

How far can you shoot accurately? How many pins are you going to use? Are you using a level?

Furthermore, there are techniques to allow you to shoot longer distances than your pins are set at. Also, you can gap pins, ie, holding 20 above and 40 below so that the gap is centered on the target can get you 30.

20, 40, 60 or 10,20,30,40,50 both could make sense depending on the shooter. Also, 25,35,45,55 could make sense, too!

One of the biggest mistakes people make is using the wrong pin, therefore, you are probably better off with fewer pins as long as you can shoot accurately. Also, the more pins you have the more that you have to adjust.

This isn't all there is to using pins, but it's probably enough to be confusing.

Thanks Jim that was too the point, j/k....actually makes sense being a math guy but i was curious as to what everyone sets their pins at...i would guess 20 for short shots, 30, 40. 40yrds is a pretty far shot, holding half over forty to get to 45???? Gotta practice to see where i'm at accuracy wise. Thanks for the input, guess I better brush up on my math so I can extrapolate out in the field......should be fun. Thanks Jim, KK and Ron.

No worries, I shoot a single pin set at 30 yards. You learn how to adjust for like distances. I would never take an animal past 40 yards with a bow. Just too many factors involved for a clean kill. If you can get into some 3d shoots you will learn to judge distance and shot placement at different angles on game. Great practice and fun too

music man i have 4 pins in my dusk devil site they are set at 20,30,40&50 yrds. ihave a60 &100yrd. pin for fun shots. when your ready we can meet at the tsc. and set the pins you want at the yardage you feel comfortable shooting, once we do that we can adjust your windage for more pin point accuracy. i can group my arrows in about a 6" group all the way out to 60 yards with this new bow, mainly after the pins are set its just practice, practice, pratice.then when your in the feild you can do all this fancy math stuff.
or you take all the guess work out it and get a range finder...

Thing that helped me most on my bow was adding a peep sight. This kept me on line when I used my site. Pretty easy to hit a target when you know the distance. In the field you may not have time so you need to be quick on judging distance to be accurate. Faster bow has less spread between pins... less margin for error in the field.

I liked shooting beman hunters carbon arrows. Better penetration over aluminum from my experience. I also shoot fingers so if I misplace my release I don't have to worry about it.

I have lots of incidents with my bow and the hard knocks hunting lessons from my past elk hunting. Catch me at one of the tillas and I will go for hours on my blunders with big bulls. Guess its like using dull fishhooks when ya first start...
