There is nothing new below which was not written about at least 10 years ago in the PNW steelhead and fly fishing magazines of which the below text is paraphrased from.
With all of these spey casting competitions currently and the objective of how far one can cast a spey line its good to keep the real benefits of spey casting in mind for those that are using them for "fishing" and not casting competitions.
Key Spey Rod Benefits
1. Allows the fly fisher to cover more water "effectively"
2. Can effectively cast from almost any position on the river without worrying about the obstacles behind you unlike when single hand casting.
3. Increases the "effective fishing" time by increasing the amount of time your fly is in the "strike zone" (close to the bottom).
4. Long rod allows easy mending to position the line or change its configuration in the current
5. Long rod allows more casts during the time you are on the water. No false casting etc...
6. Long rod allows greater steering ability of the line, leader and fly.
7. Increased mending ability allows unweighted flys to be used that can be sunk quickly to the "strike zone"
Summary
The more time your fly is "effectively fishing" in the "strike zone" equals more oppurtunity to entice a strike.
Special Note:
I did not mention the benefit of performing longer casts with a spey rod. Which is a benefit and detriment at times to the fly fisher. Its not one of the primary benefits of a spey rod from my perspective. I do not consider a line length of beyond 60-70 feet fishing "effectively" most of the time.

I hope you have spent the money for digital cable and are not still on modem out in woods there in OR ? LOL
The document is a big PDF lots of vendor ads, and takes a while to load unless you have digital cable speed.

They give away those magazines by the stack here in the sport shops, few takers, good magazine tho. Articles about spey fishing and rods was interesting. I will keep it for a reference to the spey rods available. (Not that I will be getting any more.) No fae specials listed tho.
