Hello folks,
I am looking for a place to go pier fishing for Black Rockfish this Friday (6/10/05). I have heard that Neah Bay is a good spot, but I am not sure if there is a public fishing pier there or not.
Anyone have any sugestions? I will be traveling up from the Seattle area and would like to get in at least a few hours of fun before the sun heads down.
Thanks in advance! Ken

You use to be able to go out on the jetty there but I'm not sure if they allow that anymore. When it was open the fishing could be awesome for black rockfish.

The main jetty at Westport can be good.....I've also done really well right at dusk and a bit after off the small finger jetty behind Harbor Charters. Spin bobber and any white bucktail streamer.

I haven't been to Westport before, anything I should know? Is the jetty easy to find, is it crowded? Going on a Friday is normally asking for crowds, but not being in the office will be worth it :-)
Is jigging the way to go? I am used to using plastics (grubs/worms) and going after rockfish but I welcome any and all advice for the area.
Thanks! Ken

The jetty is a piece of cake to find. Black or purple rubber jigs work during the daytime. Theres tons of room....just be careful walking across the rocks ...fish the harbor side....and look out for sneaker waves. I've watched some people clean up on rockfish also off the finger piers that radiate out from the Westport boat basin. You can also nail Lingcod from those. Catch a few greenlings using sandshrimp and hook them up on heavier gear to plunk live next to the jetty rocks.

Looks like it's going to be a rainy one, still I'd rather be out catching a cold that inside the office. If the weather is nasty I will likely be fishing off the more sheltered finger jetties than out on the big jetty.
As before I'll post and let you know how it was

Fishing was a blast, the weather was a slow constant drizzle that soaked to the bone.
The jetties were too slimey to go out on without taking a one legger. So after getting some sandshrimp as a gift from a very friendly local guy we went down past the park and caught the tail end of the slack tide on the beach.
Tonight's dinner will be 6 surf perch (dang things look like crappie to me ;-) Not the biggest fish (3/4# to 1.5#), but they were a ball to catch on light tackle.

Another good place for perch is underneath either end of the South Bay or Elk River bridge on your way to Westport. Couple ounces of lead at the end of your mainline and one or two droppers above that. Sand shrimp, shore crabs, razor clam siphon tips or the tube worms you can gather from underneath the floats at the marina. Do not be surprised if you hook a sturgeon....usually undersized but makes for an interesting fight on light spinning gear.
