OK I have three dust collector blanks here
f1808/9 gl4 4 pc
f1688/9 gl3 3 pc
f18010/11 gl3 3 pc
Been wanting to get one of them built but can't seem to find time to geter done. I would like to jump ahead and use the skagit line types on one of these. Perhaps trade them off for a decent stick??

Going to farm off the project to have functional fly rods again. Pretty easy to drop a wad a cash and still be scratching your head when it don't work. After the build I will need to match up some lines for THEM.

Went down to the rainshadow plant yesterday and picked out components. Going with Dark blue wraps/titanium fixtures
Stripping guide is a 20 is that to small for first guide on a spey?

Ditto to the above; if you're aiming at a line (such as the Skagit head system), Wind Cutters, other that require "shooting line," I'd even think about going up one more. Or at least the very bottom 'gathering guide.'

Anyway, back to the topic at hand. What's the length of the GL3 above. Suspect this is one and the same as my 'fav. tip-tossers.' Very Euro fast action rod; a pain for dry line work (imho ... unless you want to toss the RIO Grand Spey grain type lines), but very good with shooting head sinking systems.
Main 'problem' the factory version of this rod has, or rather had, was the handle was as big 'round as the fat end of a baseball bat. Bob Meiser took off about 1/2 the cork and now this is a very comfortable rod.
Same will be loaded shortly for chasing spring kings on the Rogue.kkjyd7g;pdfj;lkvzjn;
Dogs again!Obviously time to take these critters down to Emigrent Lake for a LOOOOOG swim.

One will be 14' and one 15'
I looked at the burkheimer and he likes a smaller guide. The loop rods had 20 as the bottom stripper. grab the ruler and measure the inside of your favorite and tell me how big it is please  . measured in mm

btw right now I have the 20mm for the rods. My personal debate has been is 20 to small or 25 to big.. Trying to justify that 25 since the factory rods are 20 on the big end.

Marty, checked the rod blank so the three piece above is the one I have. Don't have anything I can measure in cent/mtrs, but it's just a dad shy of 1.5 mm.

Rod is a 'Euro' action .. read that quite 'stiff,' vs. a 'traditional action' rod. Basic difference (to over simplify) between the two is the 'euro' will load down about 1/2 to 2/3's into the blank, the 'traditional' will load all the way down to the cork with an 'average caster.'
Basic difference between the two (again, to over simplify) is a 'trad.' type rod is far easier to cast for a 'newbie,' the 'Euro' action rods are where you'll get the great dist. casts, espec. with sinking tips.

Hit Dana Sturn's "Spey Pages" and do a search on 'Skagit Casting,' or Skagit lines. Short heads, ton of sink weight and actually quite easy to 'master.'

Pooie, forgot to add. 'Learn' the basic's with a dry line before you spool on that sinking head. The 'sinking thing' will just increase your "bad habits."

Sounds like you're not quite 'ready' to have me hand you a 15 or 16 foot 10wt loaded with an Ian Gordon 65 or 75 sinking head line.
Truth be told ... the 75' head one (even if they have exactly the same number of grains) is 'over kill' for me too!

Not having seen you with a spey rod ... my first impression is you may be putting FAR too much energy into your cast: e.g. not allowing the rod to do the work. Have you seen Simon Gal's book on spey casting? Best one done yet
You also have one of the best (and free too!! I think) casting instructors right in your back yard. Aaron Reimer's shop is in Carnation, WA just off the river. Wonderful fellow!!

Well thats the beast... I wanted simple and clean. The reel is darker than the flash makes it out to be. started with 25 20 16 12 strippers then large snakes all titanium to match the reel seat/hook keeper.

Marty I think you would be much happier learning to cast a floater first. If you don't know which line weights will suit you best I can send you a couple sizes of demo lines to try.
Fred's advice to visit Aaron is very good. He can wiggle that rod and most likely pick the best line weight for you.
While some lessons from an experienced spey caster might be best, if you want to a video I believe the Hazel's video to be the best one out there for a new or intermediate spey caster. Have fun!
