Bear Baiting new
      #178401 - 03/28/05 01:41 PM

Well I decided to stop the spring fishing and focus on some bear baiting in Idaho.. I have not done this for 10 years but I sure had fun last time... Looking for any DOs or DON'Ts from someone in the "know".. Plan on setting up 2 differant sites and will only be able to re-bait on the weekends... Starting out with 55 gal. drums / 300 lbs corn and lots of cooking grease from IHOP...Hopefully I will have a picture to post in a few weeks....

i have had good success in the past with stock mollasses, and cobb. both of which are pretty easy to come by. stinky old fish from albertsons or any fish market works well if you can find it. pretty disgusting to work with though.

also used bread, pies, and such from the bakery outlet. pain in the ass to unwrap all that stuff and get it in your barrel, or hole or whatever however. makes a good snak while waiting for that big burly bear to show up.

Anything above will work. Something we have used
Carp in barrel for six months with dogfood soaked in it right before using.
Donut glaze from the donut maker.
Tortillas
Apples
Grain
Honey smokers
They will eat anything.
Good luck

Right on guys...Keep it coming... Carp in a barrel for 6 months .. I did use carp 10 years ago and the bears loved it(was also fun to shoot with the bow).. I always had problems getting the bears to the bait when I was sitting on it..They sure like the area when I was gone.... Plan on changing my approach tactics this time.

Check the favorite wind direction in the bait site area come in from down wind.
Check where the bears are coming from then stay down wind.
Wear scent lock or use scent killer.
Rub bait on your boot soles.
Get off the ground, so your scent will be above the bears.
No sex for six months before the hunt.

i know where i hunt the mosquitos can be brutal. used to slather myself with insect repellant and go in. after some thought, i decided this may tip big black and burly off to my presence. so i started soaking a rag in bug juice and leaving it permanently. get the bears accustomed to it was my reasoning. i would suggest leaving a stinky old work shirt or something like that around your site to get the bears used to your scent.

sex makes your pheromone molecules in your body produce a blood by-product that circulates into your adrenale glands. This by product has an odor that is found intolerable to by bears. This odorfous substance is released by the adrenale glands in to the air. This released odor then scres the bears away.

I haven't baited in 6 or 7 years but when it was still legal here in WA. I used to bait quite a bit. One of the things we did was use a call bait to get all availible bears hitting the bait. Our call bait was any left over meat and fish we could find, throw it into a 55 gallon barrel with some sugar and let it sit tell it smells so bad you can't get close. This stinky stuff will bring them in pronto then use the bread and pastries to keep them coming back. Hope this helps

no sex for six months Guess I wont be getting a bear till I am 80 or so. I work with a guy that is baiting right now and he uses a "grape" smelling liquid. I don't know if it is oil or what but he puts it with dog food and cooking greese and he has goten his bear for about 3-4 years now. I will ask him exactly what it is and get back to you. K

Thanks for all the great tips... So far this is what I'm planning on setting out.......

-2, 55 gal. barrells with 2.5" holes for food to "roll" out.
- 250 lbs whole corn
- 200 lbs COBB (grain, oats, molassas mix)
- 2 garbage bags full of popcorn
- 100 lbs dog food
-4, 5 gal. buckets full of old freezer meat
-4, 5 gal. buckets full of grill grease
-2, 5 gal. buckets full of used hotwing/turkey deep fry oil.
- 8 gal. suplimental liquid feed for horses (molassas stuff)
- Anise Scent ball (from Bearscents.com about the size of a basketball designed to drip and smeel up the area) I can smell this thing when I pull in my driveway.
- Bear Paw (honey burn also from Bearscents.com)
- 5 gal of old Pie Cherries to pour over everything.
- one pickup load of bread and pastries from Eddies
- Two old T-shirts that smell of ME to put at the bait sites
- Permission to hunt on private land in unit 44 (priceless)

I'll keep you posted on the progress over the next few weeks...

Establish a grease pit.. they will get it on there feet and the scent trail they leave will bring there friends in too. For a new bait it is important to set out spider lines of grease. Get some old fryer grease (or bacon) and start walking away from the bait stand leaving a drizzle line. Do this in several directions so you will cross a trail they would use. You can also put a print area near you bait so you can see how big the buggers are that come to eat.
The movement cameras are pretty cool for getting after dark shots. Once they find your bait they will come back if you keep it stocked.

I talk to the guy I work with and grape seed oil is what he uses. They started baiting last weekend and as of yesterday they had not had any hits yet, still a little early he thinks. They are up on the Lochsa.

What color bear are you after? We shy away from animal products (fish, grease) on our black bear stands partly so they don't get so torn up. Dog food, a burbling bucket of barley and yeast, vanilla soaking the site, honey burns bring the blackies in just fine and ...a few... browns, but the brown bears aren't near as destructive or protective of the site as they are when we've put bacon grease and fish down.

so, how goes it? any takers?. also, i cant belive i forgot my best tactic for bear baiting. MARSHMALLOWS! put em out on tree limbs and bush branches around your site. put em exactly where you want the bear to be for your best shot. put a few fairly high up so shy bears can see em a ways off. they are the clincher. bears love em and it's usually the first thing they'll hit once they figure out what they are. last bear i got was standing on his hind legs reaching for a well placed marshmallow. he went down like a ton of bricks.

Well, I have 2 bait sites going and as of yesterday no takers as of yet. Talked with some other guys baiting the same area and nothing yet for them as well. Plan on checking the bait again this weekend (with Marshmallows)...The snow has really been coming off the hill slow in the area I'm hunting...The birds are sure hitting the baits well !!!

Well took the wife and kit bear hunting for Mothers day (gotta love that woman)...Friday night, looked like something had been hitting the bait, but could not find a good track...Pilled up some more wood that only a bear could move and headed into the stand for the first time with my bow on Saturday night 7:00PM..A VERY NICE Cinnamon bear was already at the site as I approached. Got within 20 yards and was just getting ready to nock an arrow when he caught wind of me...He slowly walked off giving me no shot..Man what a Bear...This is going to be a very long week before I can get back up there....
