Dang Lawnmower!! new
      #184507 - 05/01/05 03:15 PM

My lawn mower is giving me fits. I have changed the fuel, fuel line, air filter, spark plug, and oil. When I fire it up it will sputter at first and then just get up to speed and run for a second or two and then dies. Then I have to go prime the carb again just to start all over. It is a never ending process and I get no mowing done. I have order a primer bulb for it thinking that maybe that is the problem. Any thoughts? Oh, it is a Craftsman with a 6 horse Briggs and Stratton and I bought it brand new in 2001.

I'd try taking the fuel line off the carb and blow back towards the tank. Sounds like enough fuel to prime, but not enough flowing to keep it running. Good luck. Bill

Yep, or you have water in the gas. I had this same problem last week; I emptied the gas and refueled and the problem was solved.

Sounds like an obstruction in the line, I'd do what BBob suggested. Probably not the primer bulb. Is this the first time used this year? Did you use stabil or store it with no fuel. Could have some gum in the jet too. Good luck!

Main jet is pluged. Blast it out with spray carb cleaner.

Nope, I got interrupted by my 5 year old son stepping on a broken bottle in the irrigation ditch 2 hours and 7 stiches later and I haven't had the time to fix it yet.

Bux,
I have the same problem with mine...After spending $150 to the local 'small engine repairman', I've determined to be a heat problem. Here's what I have to do to get the mower running:
1) Prime as usual
2) Pull start as usual
3) Do not let go of the dead-man throttle, reach down and keep the engine running by pressing the the primer bulb when it want to die. Do this until the engine heats up sufficiently to sustain ignition. This usually dosen't take anymore than about 20-30 sec. of running the engine.
Good luck,
SJChamby

You can try putting in some Sea Foam additive cleaner. If it acts like SJCanby's it may be running lean. Check the carb and intake and make shure there are no vacum leaks. Also with the Briggs motors if the carb mount gets loose it can vibrate and brake the plastic intake tube.

By the way, the part number for the briggs&stratton carb gasket set is 498261. I ran a small engine shop for a couple of years and in the spring at least 75% of the repair work was gummed up fuel systems.

Klick is correct, wife is a manager for Sears service....you know the guys that come to your house and fix you're stuff. Most guys don't store there tools with a gas stabilizer during the offseason....our gas sucks now days....also, get rid of those old metal gas cans.....they rust over time and will plug your fuel system. Store with fresh fuel, gas stabil. I start mine mid winter to be sure all is ok and to circulate everything. Gotta treat em like you're winterizing your boat motor. I once many years ago stored a mower over the winter full of fuel and by spring time it wouldn't start. Dropped the carb bowl and it was full of green stuff and it didn't smell like gas anymore. Take precautions, gas grows fast in spring and not having a mower makes for one ugly jungle after 3, 4 weeks of waiting for someone else to fix it.

Something else, if you need an exploded drawing go to the Sears parts website and enter the model # of the mower (917.XXXXXX)then just Klick on the part you are working on

Carb sprayed everything, cleaned out the inside of the fuel pump housing, and it still wont run. If I continually press the primer bulb it will run but after 2 minutes of that my finger gets sore and it dies

Bux, new carbs are like only around 35 dollars or so...if you cleaned it and it still wont run i'd get one. cheaper than a new mower. good luck

Did you clean out the brass bolt that holds the float bowl on? That's the jet. Gas should run out of the bottom of the carb so get ready to pinch the line with vise grips. PM if you need more info, may be easier to explain on the phone.
