Hi all,
I spent this last weekend fishing the upper Deschutes in Central Oregon, on the backside of Mount Bachelor. The river was small, but the scenery was incredible and the fishing was even better! The river wound its way through a nice prairie valley and was jammed with little trout! Just awesome. It reminded me of picture I have seen of Montana (never been there).
My question is, where are the small meandering streams in Washington state? Are they all East of the Cascade mountains? I'd love to visit some more of these productive smaller rivers if I knew where to look, and any help is appreciated.
Thanks! - Scott

There is some on the east side of the olympics. The Hamma Hamma is good, plus others.

Scott, I know a few, Wayner knows a lot - GreatwhiteHunter knows a lot. Ping Chad K at work; he's a wealth of info on small trout streams. He lives up in North Bend and knows that area well.
More when I get home and off this slow 28k hookup.
I'm hitting a small trout river here on Thursday
Bassin with a guide tomorrow. 103F right now, so we're hiding in the A/C til the shadow falls over the pool. Then we'll swim and try for more crappie off the dock once it gets dark. AAAAAAHHHH Vacation

Sczott; I love fishing our small streams. We have a lot, and most are too small to need a great deal of pressure. I can tell you that most any stream on the west side of the mountains will hold native trout and many hold lots of the. Look for streams that are at 1000--3000 feet elevation and preferably one that have a barrier to anadramous fish. That way you avoid hooking smolts and the fish that live there don't have to compete with smolts. There are at least such streams within 75 minutes of Seattle. The problem is that our acidic water will not grow many big trout. Most will be in the 8-12 inch range. A 14 incher is a whopper.
If you really want meandering small streams try the Yakima River tribs around Ellensburg. Most of the West side tribs are steep gradient with fast riffle pool structures.

I ran across this site, thought about picking up their stream map for Washington. http://www.streammaps.com
Thanks for the tips. Ellensburg sounds like a great idea.

I've got one of those stream maps for Washington. Good map, but you still need a road map to find out how to get to some of the spots on it. At least I do...
