Spent about a day and a half here and saw tons of deer. Anybody hunt this area??
And if so where?? Saw both Mulies and Whitetails down low along the river. Batchelor group of Bucks, 7 in all...on two point and the rest were 4 points 22 - 26. All bucks that I saw were tall and narrow, is that the general genetic makeup for the area? Didn't see any spike mulies but lots of forkies are they equivalent?

Hunted Gardner last year, saw lots of small bucks. Heard overall it was tough. Only saw few kills. Rained all weekend, lots of shooting, probably chasing the few shooters around the hills.
Mild winter though...hmmmmmm....
I'm drew my Oregon tag this year, no more dogging orange hunters all day.

I did a drop camp above Winthrop a few years back and there a ton of deer around...every evening they would pop outta the woodwork along the river bottoms. Most deer I seen killed were nice animals, some wider than others..some tall. Beautiful area!

I have hunted a little around Mazama and we hunted out of a camp near Twisp for a few years. My uncle had a cabin in Mazama until recently. I only hunted from it once. The few other times I was at his cabin we would drive around between Mazama and Winthrop in the evenings just to look at the deer. You will see them along the roads a lot, but not so much during hunting season.
When we hunted the Twisp area it involved a lot of hiking.

I believe those are migratory mule deer, so they could be anywhere in hunting season if it snows unless you are talking early bow or early high buck gun season.
I hunted not too far from there a few years. Due to the migratory nature, the hunting is hit/miss on animals being around.

Very true Jim, I believe those deer do travel north - south form wash to canada. Could be anywhere, cept during the warm months. Good input!

There are resident mulies around the lower areas, but most of the mulies around there migrate up and down in elevation. Depending on the weather, hunting season usually falls during their migration out of higher altitudes.

Find water, you'll find deer. Just need to hike in far enough to get away from the roadies. River is good, but get private access and you find yourself a nice little funnel after opening day.

Thanks for the help. I have bowhunted for 27 years and I am thinking strongly of heading over there for the opener. I don't need to shoot anything so I would truly be going after one of those nice 4x4 I saw...I think with the early season they should be close to where they were.
Thanks again for all the input.
