BG, you raise an interesting question vis a vis your local river 'bottoms.' PNW's are usually rock/gravel to one degree or another ... leaving the 'special case' NU out of this one.
What's common for river bottoms on your streams? fae

gravel, sand, mud, clay banks, and small rocks compared to what you have out there. Less CFS also and less risk to waders especially the aging kind !

There are some streams in NY (good fishing, too!) that have SLATE bottoms. Large, flat "blocks" of slate, algae-covered, mossy, wet slate is like trying to stand up or move around on GLARE ICE!
When we would go to fish Fish Creek, or its branches, it was bad enough scaling the shale and slate cliffs to get down into the ravines, but then you had to contend with taking numerous spills during the day. And there were plenty of sheer drop-offs into deep water.
Never did find a good wader sole for that, and we normally fished it when weather got better so we could wet wade, otherwise you could have ended up dead.
I don't live around there any more, and don't fish it for that reason. But I do miss the good fishing (and the adventure) of it all.

in many of the GLs old logging rivers like this one makes wading and fishing quite interesting, know how many flys I have lost in those jams over the last 25 years ? I don't want to know

You should see under the water in this river every bend hole is one big log jam, all wild steelhead too, has not been stocked in a long time. Crystal clear water requires light tippets too, 4-8lb, no boats on this river they can't get through all the log jams !!

That's not a log jam. A log jam is when you have trees two feet around and 50 feet long piled 10 to 20 feet high in a jumble some place in the middle of a real river. Around this neck of the woods you have to skirt many of these just to go fishing for a day. And not all of them hold fish, just a lot of snags.

Jim's right on.
BTW, Hal, those OLD logs at the bottom of the rivers could be SALVAGED for some excellent wood. There is at least ONE guy who is doing that in deep water on Lake Superior, and making some big bucks off the enterprise.
Many of them were some rare hardwoods, like American Chestnut.

GOD! That took me back to my 'childhood!' The best show in town was when the loggers would get a pile up like that and then had to go in with DY-No-Mighie and blow the darned things apart to clear the river.
Like a huge game of kids "pick-up sticks" to figure out just where to put in the explosive(s). Idea being was to move the jam apart and do as little damage to the logs as possible. Recall guy who did the work was one of the highest paid men (the saw filers were the highest) in the logging camp.

The fun days back in Ocean Falls? A friend's Dad grew up in Bella Coola and has told similar tales. Apparently back then the drive up there is something to be remembered and feared for the rest of your days.

Yeah - I remember the logs coming down Black River, Moose River, and both branches of the West Canada. THAT used to happen with all too much frequency in the spring, and the sawmills were humming right along.
I also remember the French-Canadian 'jacks coming into town, and blowing a month's pay in a night of hell-raising. Wasn't safe for a kid to be on the streets when that happened!

There ain't no French-Canadians. They're French or Canadian. Hyphenation will destroy a culture and can cripple a country.

Given the 'history' of eastern Canada ... I'm not quite sure about that. Anyone want to 'read' the 'history' of how all this started?
71, my grasies ... you out rank me by a few years.

What I missed BobK's birthday will have to send him something special. Like some flys. Its on my list and I have the address.
BTW, how could a simple thread like Felt Sole Replacement get over 900 views !! My felt sole project is becoming an internet fly board saga.

Hey Bob. Why do you want his flies for. They didn't work for me out here in the great state of Washington. I have retired them to a plastic bag.
