Big Bow's
      #199994 - 08/10/05 09:17 PM

In the past two days I've hooked 4 really nice rainbows and landed 3 in the Boise river. All fish were easily over 18 inches. My camera's been acting kinda funny so I hope my pictures turned out because these were trophy wild fish from right in the heart of downtown Boise. Anyone have a scanner for when I get these developed?

My old one from when I went to football camp there several years ago finally hit the dirt.
Good luck at school bro.

Well the scanner in the house isn't very good and only two of the pics turned out. Both fish were released unharmed back into the Boise River.

Please comment! I landed a 17" bow above Barber Dam last year that had an unusually wide colorful red band. Is this a "redband" I hear mentioned once in a while? Wasn't aware they were in the Boise River? Definitely different fish than I've seen in this stretch. (had full adipose fin)

All true NATIVE rainbow trout in the Payette, Boise, Weiser and Owyhee (as well as the other streame of south west Idaho) are red bands. The populations have been so adulterated with hatchery trout (mostly McCloud River stocks)that there are few if any pure bred native red bands left. Do a Google on Red Band Rainbows. Interesting to note that many biologists consider the California river strains and the Columbai river strains as the sam e fish. I do know the McCloud river fish were imported to Idaho because they survive better in hatcheries than the "local" trout do.

The fish you caught was probably displaying it's spawning colors.

Thanks, Mojo. I'll continue to educate myself on red bands. I like the stretch between Barber and Diversion dams; at least before the dreaded weed takes over. Not many fish but a few hogs. Quite a few whitefish just below Diversion; I've caught a couple of them. Saw a really big Brown one evening rising and boiling several times on one of the long deep stretches behind the crow inn. I've tried larger nymphs late evening but yet to hook anything; only a few inspections. I hear reports of big browns mostly lower down through town but only saw one 4-5 pounder caught right below Eckert road diversion by a kid with a Zebco and a #2 Mepps.
Question: Any experience from anyone with Browns in Lucky Peak or Arrowrock?

Downtownbrowns once found a head of a rather large brown at the base of Arrowrock dam. Haven't caught any myself but I'm sure there are still a few around in Lucky Peak.

Good memory, Dominic.
I'm going up there this week to that same spot with some leftover steelhead roe. I'm going to lob huge gobs of it out into the glory hole and let it just sit there.
Chances are I'll catch some big squaws but you never know- I've seen monsters come out of there.

Pretty interesting. IDF&G has never stocked brown trout in Lucky Peak. I'm not saying DTB is full of it, I'm just saying it's wierd. Someone may have hauled the carcass up there, or maybe it got caught in the Boise, Transported in a cooler or live-well of some sort, and dumped in Lucky Peak?

Fished the Glory hole yesterday Gary and didn't even touch a fish. The water was really low and was more like a creek all the way down to the Macs Creek boat launch. The glory hole still looks good but. This time last year I did fairly well down there. Good luck Gary.

A Fish & Game biologist I spoke with a couple years ago told me that published stocking record is "almost" complete, but due to how far back it goes, some information is suspected lost or incomplete.
