Early Chantrelles
      #200725 - 08/14/05 02:18 PM

Saw some small fresh picked ones for sale at the Food Coop. Just waiting for a bit of moisture to fall at the higher elevations before going looking.

Picked chanterelles three times between July 15-30. This was the earliest I've found harvestable numbers of yellows. Early July rains brought them out; August heat dried them out. Need more rain!

I have found earlys in the heavy mountain fog layer.. no rain but that was enough to pop the whites out. Those early rains made the oysters go crazy

The gettin' was good this weekend. Yellows and whites in prime condition. We picked behind someone, but still found plenty. A commercial picker was selling chanterelles out of his truck along Hwy 410 last week; they're definately out in good numbers.

Thanks for the report! Time to check the higher elevations. All of my near sea level spots have been producing but not anything special.

None yet....I've been checking every couple of days. Identified a new to me non-edible Russula this weekend. I know most of the species but there a ton of variation in several. Only one way to tell on some of those.....smallest of small nibbles and spit it out. If its a bad one you get a quick peppery burn. If it's a good one no burn and no other unpleasant tastes or odors. This one burned a bit. I wouldn't recommend this method to anyone unless you can at least be confident of the shroom belonging to the genus Russula. Make sure it is a tiny piece and spit it out immediately. In this case there were enough of these to perk up my interest as to their character. Found a nice bunch of freshly emerged Shrimp Russulas in the same area.

Picked a bunch of yellow chanterelles this afternoon. There were four other mushroom hunters on the hill. Had to look in the brush for most of ours. Found a few already past prime, and a fair number of buttons just popping up. I'd tell you how good they were for dinner, but then you'd be knocking on my door, asking if there were any leftovers
