Being green on the spey systems... aka not a lot of experience with spey casting. (can cast a mean dry fly for trout with a single) I am heading to bc and need to outfit the rod with a line... any particular multi heads of choice?
Would need to have a full dry option...
Delays has me scrambling to get one rod setup in time. Anybody seen homer? Hope he is ok

Personal opinion here only, but between the two .. get the Mid-spey multi-tip.

Fred I would love to but even if he shipped it to me I wouldn't know what was the right line. I have a good spey shop in town and he has agreed to wiggle it for me. I just don't know enough to know the difference. So you say midspey because it is easier to cast? or control after the cast? I can cast just not with much beauty

Either one of the above will do I would get some Rio T-14 and cut it up into custom heads also if you have time.

Marty, don't know 'exactly' where you're located but Aaron Reimer has a WONDERFUL shop in Carnation, WA. He's got a WAD of test rods/lines on his wall for folks to 'try before you buy.'

If you have a shop in your town that "talks spey" that would be your best bet. I would follow his advice as to which line to buy. Either line will serve you well and either would be just fine to learn with. The MidSpey will let you cast a little farther without having to strip line before the next cast. Other then that I can see no difference. If you are not an experienced caster I would skip the T-14 until you learn with the floating tip first and then with the progressively faster sinking tips supplied with your VersiTip line. Have fun.

If I had known what I know now a few years ago, I would have avoided windcutters. Not that I don't think they have a place, but not as an all around line. I rarely use them anymore except for specialized uses with sink tips. Again this is my own idea, if you have a good fly shop pro get their advice/help. If you can, try out as many different set ups as you can.

Being green with spey he suggested the windcutter... this way I can buy a new one later when I cast 
Anyway I have line and backing on the rod/ reel. Now I need to get the tips ready for leaders.

As usual there will be many varied opinions. I feel the Rio WC VersiTip is one of the very best buys in a spey line for a new caster. It has more options then any other line on the market. It's main drawback from my point of view is you may get tired of stripping line before the next cast. For the time being if you can only get the head out of the guides with no line shoot your fly will be between 70' and 80' feet from you (floating tip and a leader as long as the rod). Also with no line shoot the belly will mend just like the vaunted DT that Fred and some others find pleasant to use. Two final thoughts in closing. Have fun, and catch a BIG one!

Hal, He may find he has "no issues" when landing a fish with his spey rod. Not all of us fish in those brush choked creeks wher you find your thrills.(G)

Well, if you toss in a couple of yellow lab's going nuts at the water's edge ... he'll have "issues." Actually, one of the draw backs of two hander's is fishing low water. You'll actually hook more fish (high stick nymphing), but the buggers will have a greater tendency to go 'airborne' on you do to the rod lentgh.
That said, don't forget to "bow to the fish" when he/she's at eye level with you!!

I would suggest getting the MidSpey. I got the windcutter, and find myself restricted by it's casting abilities. It casts nice, but will never shoot the distance I need. I actually wish I got the grand-spey with the way I cast.
