Grouse hunting
      #204401 - 09/06/05 03:42 PM Attachment (0 downloads)

Anyone get out and do any grouse hunting over the weekend? My dad and I went up out of tonasket and did pretty good. Saturday night we saw 15 in about an hour and a half. I shot six times and got three, my dad shot at three and got one. Sunday night we took two, but didn't see as many because a guy on a four wheeler drove down the road we were walking right in front of us. I am down in the Moscow ID area and am wondering if sny of you out there could give me some tips on places to go in South East Washington.

Why limit yourself to SE Washington. There are a ton of grouse spots around Moscow. Try some of the forest service land around Troy.

Thanks for the tip, but I am a WA resident going to school at UI, and I don't want to pay for an out of state hunting license.

Aha! I'll ask around. My brother and brother in law both went to school in Moscow. I'm betting one or the other will have a spot or two. If I get any info, I'll let you know.

Are you just into grouse hunting? If not, then you are in prime time country for chukhar and roosters. I'm more a fan of chukhar around that country. Hunt the draws and breaks around the Snake and you'll not only get a dandy of a work out but a few birds as well. Chukhar will test your skills to the max. Heres a hint, pick up a balloon and tie a nice long string to your belt loop and let it go about 30' up. It will cast a shadow and the birds will be spooked and hold tight. Something to do with hawks...Worked for me, or so I think it did...

Can you shoot grouse on the ground or on the fly?

Josh,
We jsut tell the newbies that so we know where to find 'em when they get lost. "Hey Pard, have you seen some dude with a baloon tied to his belt?" "Yup, that rookie is in the next draw...good luck with him..."

There are a ton of chucks in the Snake River canyon...
