I am finding that the fuel milage on the new duramax is not near what the 02 model was and am loking at options for improving milage. I have been told different things so figured I would ask here. 4" exhaust system? Chip?
milage empty on the freeway cruising 70mph or even less is less than 16mpg.. 02 was 19-20 + Dealer said "yup sounda about right" and infact indicated that I was getting better than average. Cause is pumping up the HP and Ft/Lbs. Gotta keep up with Ford and Dodge.
So whats the best first thing to change.

Keith, Change out the whole mess for a Ford! Sorry, I had to...
Actually my neibor has a Duramax and he just put a K&N filter and intake set-up and bigger exhaust (4"?) on it. He says next step is one of those chips that you can set on 5 levels (not sure what brand), but one of the settings was "ECONOMY". The dealer says that'll help a bunch. I'll ask him what brand when he gets home.

By-the-way, I'm getting 18 mpg, and I have less than 5000 miles on her.

Exhaust and K & N is probably the best first change. Also, check your tire pressure and make sure it is near the high range. Make sure you are specific on the exhaust note you are going for. Some of the mufflers are designed for extra noise, not just extra power!

Mojo... Fords are great trucks too but Doc said I needed to conserve my hearing. Drove all three before we jumped. She who must be obeyed said Chevy... I didn't catch what she said about the Ford.. it was running at the time but I think the gist of it was "When Hell freezes over". or words to that effect.
KN filter for starters then. Tire pressure is 70 front and rear. Funny how it came off the lot at 45. Better ride? Imagine that.

My 6.0 is pretty close to as quiet as the neibor boys Duramax. You put new intakes and a 4" exhaust on yours and she'll make a bit more noise thna she does now.
The Chief bought a Dodge, chipped the hell out of it and asked me if I want to race. I asked what setting his chip was on, and he said "Extreme". I said "sure, I'll race you in 100,000 miles when you motor is junk..." He wasn't too impressed.

16ft dual axle flatbed, Sled, Driftboat.. Now when I add the camper to the mix its more like 12-14 but just straight towing it does pretty good. I have an edge programmer in it also. As for the Tranny, Im not exactly sure the model I think its a ZF something but its a 6 speed manual.

DD, I get about 15 with the camper on. On the Texas trip last winter, I was getting a bit over 13. A buddy in Yuma told me to put on a K&N. ( be careful not to over-oil it, or my mechanic said that intake sensors can get screwed up.) Got 2 mpg right out of the box. Couldn't hardly believe it. I tend to run about 65 with the camper on. More than that, and the milage starts going down. Just got back from a 1300 mile trip to hunt moose in BC, total mpg for the trip was 22.5. Just had the canopy on, and two of us in the truck, with all our stuff. You should be getting better mpg than you are, according to my experience with my '04. I'm heading north again Sat, so will monitor the mpg and let you know.

I put the K&N air filter in and managed 11mpg on trip to Pyramid lake towing the boat and Camper on. this is up from 8.5 to 9.5. I am anxious to see if it shows up on empty run too.

K&N filter helped. went from <16 to just over 19 running 65mph empty. I can live with it. The run with the boat and camper to pyramid worked out to 10.9 mpg running 65mpg with is 2 more than before the Filter.

Got back, 1300 miles round trip up the Frasier R. to Prince George, then east and back down the Thompson through Kamloops.
Empty on the way up, with the canopy on, running about 65. Then with a moose in back on the way home. Got 21.5 for the whole trip.
