First the 'dump on the beach,' break a rod, and yesterday ... down at the beach with the Labs to let them have a good run/swim.
And a GD wasp desides (in the middle of nowhere) to take a hunk out of my hide. I've very alergic to the darned things so right arm is swelling up like a pumpkin!

Fred, BE CAREFUL! While I'm not superstitious, bad things just seem to happen in "threes"!

Wasps we don't have them out here its too cold !! LOL
You better stay home away from that river for a month or more the way your luck is going.

Well, BG, just WAIT until you step on a yellowjacket's nest! You'll wish they WERE "just wasps"!

Bob, you're closer to the 'truth' than you may know. First time all this started (no prob. with the occational sting) occured at our vineyard.
When we purchased the property (a pear orchard) the house front lawn area was done in Juniper Tams. These things were totally out of control, so Joan wanted to remove them and start from ground zero for the landscaping. No problem with the idea here.
Purchase a gas "HEAVY duty" gas hedge trimer and she proceeds to whack the hell out of the things on a Friday (think it was a Friday). Anyway, the next morning I go out to clean up the mess ....
How she could 'rape' these 'shrubs' and not disturb two HUGE nests is beyond me. I start and within minutes I'm running like hell was on fire!!!! That escapade ended up with me in the hospital with IV's stuck in several places.
One sting now is all it takes. Poop and crap.

Fred - 25 or 50 mg of Benadryl (1 or 2 tablets) will work WONDERS if you get stung. Remember that, keep a package at home, and slip a couple of tablets in a small container in your fishing vest, "Just In Case"!
I don't know about "Chi-Town", but around here the wasps are still active, even though temps are cool (about the same as there).

Fred, I'm starting to worry about you. BobK is right about the Benadryl, it should do quite a bit to help in an emergency if you ever tangle with another Yellowjacket or wasp. On a different note, can you give me any update on the fall run for the Rogue, I'm just curious to see how it's shaping up. Take care and try putting a rabbit's foot in your pocket.

Roger on the Benadryl, it does work, but puts me to sleep asap. Pharm. Guy and Doctor (yesterday) also recommended Claridin (sp?) or it's generic counter part.
As I have soccer games to ref., can't afford to 'be asleep at the switch.' Claridian (again, sp?) did do the trick of reducing the swelling (sting was just above the right elbow) from arm pit to finger tips. Slower acting, but effective.

we had one big wasps nest in our cabin in michigan. they were the size of #2 pencils.
waited until winter, knocked down nest and threw in on snow, those things never saw cold before. cup of gas and a match put them all to sleep.

That's the treatment I use for wasps, too!
For yellowjackets, I normally cautiously place a coffee can half full of gasoline near the entrance, then use a long stick to push it over, then throw a lit match.... bye, bye yellowackets!
