Recently bought a 1858 New Army Remington .44 Black Powder revolver. (Cabeles) Just a question: is it safe to carry this firearm loaded with percussion caps on the nipples? Would have the hammer down on empty chamber. Gun would be holstered while hunting.

Perfectly safe as you describe. That baby will be a ball to shoot. Have fun with it! Bill

I don't know about your New Army remington, but I have a Ruger stainless Old Army .44, and you can load all 6, and let the hammer down between chambers. There is a slot machined into the back of the cylinder, between each pair of nipples, so the hammer can be safely lowered into that notch. And BB is right!!! they are a hoot to shoot!!!

Or are they just easier to spot in the dark?

I have really enjoyed shooting this gun. I am amazed at how similar it shoots to most modern weapons and accurate too. The #10 percussion caps make me a little nervous, seems like they could go off just looking at them. I love this gun, just shot the Pyrodex 30 gr. pistol pellets and boy does that make it easy to load. Thanks for the advice, I plan on carrying the gun on my next BP deer hunt.
