used quad/bike prices
      #214065 - 11/05/05 01:30 AM

How are people selling their used bikes and quads when they're asking almost new prices? I'm seeing used rigs for only a few hundred less than the cost of a new model. Who the hell is buying a used dirt bike for $5300 when a new one is $5500 on the showroom floor?

I had the same experience when I was looking for a small car. Dealerships were charging 2-3,000 above book value for Hondas and Toyotas, making the price for some of the 5 year old vehicles only a few thousand below the cost of a new vehicle.

Any small street legal motorcycles are going for top dollar even with winter being here. Wish I had a dozen to sell right now. Everytime I look in the Cycletrader I can't believe it either how much people want for dirtbikes. I don't really think those people are selling them though. With financing so easy now, it's too easy to buy new.

A lot of people put thousands of bucks into mods. for their bike...Exhaust,re-jeting,shocks,ect. They may just be trying to re-coop some of their money. If you add these add-ons to the price of a new bike it makes sense why the used prices are so high.

And remember, anything that says $5500 new, is actually gonna be more like $6500-6800 out the door.....Bikes aren't like cars, you aren't getting out the door for the sticker price. Many times the price seems close to new, but, is still much less.

I want a stock bike. No paying extra for mods. And the state still gets ya for sales tax on used bikes so the total price is more than the asking price, much like the OTD price on a new one.

I bought a new street legal dirt bike three years ago. The only things that I use it for is scouting hunting areas and going fishing. I would be bucks ahead if I would have bought used without the sales tax.

I went with the Suzuki DR-Z 400S. After all taxes and lic. it ran me just under 6,000. I was happy with the new bike...tons up get up and go for a 400, but I changed the tires for better traction. My problem was that I couldn't find a bike in excellent condition for a decent price, I caved and bought new.

I can understand going new. I've seen a few fair deals (very few) on used bikes but they've been too far away for me to look at. There's a nice XT350 on craigslist right now in Port Orchard.

I've been thinking of an Enduro myself. Nice idea for turn-arounds.

They'd be good for turnarounds, but most are much more expensive than the average moped. Something to think about when thieves are prowling boat launches.
They're fun as hell though.

This was Monday, 30 minutes from home. I'll be running around the Skagit Valley on Sunday.
Saving on sales tax when buying used from a private party is hard. You need documentation that the bike is damaged and worth less than book value. Otherwise, you pay sales tax on the book price.
