Can anyone give me any info on Steelhead in the Vedder? I have never been there and would like to take my camper up and fish for steelhead. I have no idea when they start to come up the river or when the peak of the run is. Can you fish close to a campground? Do I have to buy a long rod and a bobber? Can I buy a 3 day license? Thanks in advance for any help.

OF, look up "Fred's Custom Tackle" in Chilliwac (or is that a 'k?'). They have a VERY good map of the Vedder, access, spots/slots, etc. We used the map a couple of weeks ago when the four of us were up 'chasing Chums.' The map is dead on ... save for one minor omission. At the end of Layman (think I got that right) Road the map suggest access (by car) ends there. Not so. You can drive down stream at least another half (or more) miles. From there there's a major walking path that will take you down another mile +.
The shop should also be able to give you good info on RV parks in the immediate area.
Fred (Evans) ... no relation, but I do have one of his hats on my head as I type. Couldn't pass on that one.

Fred, It's Lickman Road I believe. Also the steelies run later in the Chilliwack/Vedder system. I think December is the beginning, and Feb/Mar/Apr can be really good if the river doesn't blow out. They close the system sometime in late spring, and it's only flyfishing/C&R below Vedder Crossing bridge. Really ought to check the regs...

Mojo's right on the correct street name (pulled the map last night) AND even more on point vis a vis the game Regs. Amazing how these things get written .. apparently by folks who don't fish and are 'wanna-be' Atty's.
Same thing here on the Rogue. You can fish all year around, but just a question of for what/where/when. To add to the fun, one section of the regs also states (actually for a good reason) the equipment must be 'gear appropriate.'
Example of this would be 'now' on the upper Rogue. Several thousand summer runs tooting about .. and Fall Kings. You can fish for one, but not the other. So OSP officer says: "Hum, average size of 'a legal fish' is 5-8 pounds and you're using 20# line/leader ...." You can guess the rest .... you can bet you may end up with a very NASTY citation.

AH Fred,
But if the fish(steelies) aren't spooked by 20# main and 12# leader, why not. Although I would feel better about using 12# main and 8# leader with one of those Rogue crawdads I was tellin you about earlier.

Old Fart,
The best steelhead fishing on the Vedder IMO, happens in late March / April. That's because the crowds are starting to thin by then. You won't believe the amount of people that fish the Vedder for steelhead, especially in February when the run really gets going. It's like salmon season on a popular river down here.
You can buy a 1 day, 8 day, or annual non-tidal license AND you'll need the steelhead stamp. If you were to fish a couple of days there, you'd be lookin' at about $70 American for a license because the exchange rate sucks now too.
There are some nice fish in the Vedder and I used to fish it a lot, but IMO, there are better, less crowded steelhead fisheries here in WA.

Sounds good to me OF!
When I say less crowded, I mean the ONLY steelhead fisheries down here that are MORE crowded than the Vedder are probably Blue Creek, Reiter and the Bogi hatchery in December.
On a typical February day you'll see a couple HUNDRED rigs parked along the river. The difference with the Vedder fishery is that there isn't a hatchery terminal area. People are spread out along the whole 20 miles or so of accessible bank area, so you don't stand shoulder to shoulder. But the fish are spread out too, so if you want to have a good chance of hooking one you have to cover A LOT of water.
I'm not sayin' it's not worth a trip up there, but for me, I've found some quiet little fisheries that I enjoy more and have to drive a lot less.

Tony, I'm lost as to the point of the above, but under a given set of conditions even I, the Sultan of Spey (like ya ) will use 12-15# tippet material. (Think high water and/or expecting BIG FISH.) Normally, for me anyway, 12# would be way over kill.
Ever strip off about 40 feet of 10# line off a rod tip and have someone try to break it by jurking on same? It would take one heck of a big guy; trust me on that one ... I lost the "contest," fellow who (finally!) won ran close to 280 and didn't have an ounce of fat on his 'logger body.'
(Thank God he's a heck of a nice Guy; you WOULD NOT want him pissed off at you!)

no Fred I can't say that I have tried it, but I know what you are sayin
My point was, if you can fish with 20# main and it doesn't spook the fish, why not use it especially when you consider the possibility that a big Nook might "accidentally" take your offering...stupid fish!
