Anybody happen to own about a 1999 454? My truck got totalled(sp?) by a red light running DUI. Looking at about what I can afford and still get an actual crew cab. I've seen a 3/4 ton chevy with a 454. Expriences out there? Mileage? My old chevy got only 12mpg out of a 350.
Thanks

I had a '97 1 ton vortec. It was the strongest gas engine I've ever pulled with & when I say pull, I mean a 7x20 steel trailer with 10 horses. After about 120k, things didnt sound right ,so I took it to town (Winnemucca) & had them hook it up to the computer. They (local mechanic) told me every thing was o.k. I used it for another 5k & blew the engine. Had a dead injector.Blew a piston through the block. Other than that it was a great truck, but, we werent payin $3 for gas back then . It was a 4x4 w/5 speed , 410 rear end & the best I ever got out of it was 12mpg.

I don't know much about the 454. From what I've heard it is hard to beat the 6.0L in the newer trucks. The 5.3 and the 8.1 seem to have some random problems. I'm not sure why.
I've gotten a little over 16 mpg for stretches and averaged 15.3 mpg on a trip to Mt Bachelor and drove about 1000 miles in total. That's with a K & N air filter and Flowmaster muffler. My truck is a 2004 Chevy Crew Cab 2500.
Anyway, I'm a big believer in changing the exhaust and air filter especially if you tow. I believe these changes can reasonably be expected to add 1-2 mpg. Most trucks are starved for air with relatively tiny exhaust pipes.

Bighoof,, my brother is a log home builder,, has a 96 dodge cummins, pulls HUGE loads with that truck since the day he got it... he has 350k on the dodge & had to get a new tranny at 280k, but other than that, has been an excellent truck. I was so impressed, I got an '04 dodge cummins dually ,1 ton,& it hasnt let me down.Tremendous power & durability. I know diesels are more expensive, but, they truly are a better value for your $. Just my .02 , but, as a former "gas engine fan", I can truly say that diesel engines are , better towing , longer lasting, more economical & a better value for your dollar.
