Dog Question new
      #173504 - 03/03/05 08:47 PM

My wife and I are kicking around buying a Lab, we have an ankle biter right now and neither of us has ever had a big dog. We are planning on having kids in the near future and she is thinking that we should have the baby first due to the way our little dog gets jealous around little kids? I Dont really thin it matters. Any input on this?

Of all the labs I've ever seen, I'd be worried more about your "ankle biter" than a lab. The key is socializing the new pup when and if you get it. Take him around kids of your friends early on (like a week after you get him). With him being around kids, he'll get used to em from an early age and you shouldn't have a problem. Another thing to consider is the parents tempermant. There are labs (as other dogs) that are naturally more aggressive and dominant than others by nature.

If you do choose to get one, find a respectable breeder that knows what's up. You can find exactly what your looking for if you take your time and research a little.

Also a dog is alot of responsibility. I think if you got the dog first, since they grow and mature faster than a human, you'd probably have an easier time than having a baby AND a puppy to deal with. Of course your gonna spend more time raising your kid and the pup would be a little neglected I think. It would'nt be fair for pup. Also "ankle biter" would get used to having a "baby" around before the real baby.

the only concern i would have is teach them early to not even nip...my puppy right now is going through the ( I want to play so i'll chew on your finger's)stage....if a dog is not broken of this ASAP it will continue to want to nip or unintentionally bite while playing....a quick little tap on the nose and yell ouch and they get the point pretty fast....also make sure they have something they are ALLOWED to chew on and give them that.....it will save you mega $$$ on buying new shoes or other items they find chewable.....good luck

if a puppy is a nipper every time they nip just grab there jaw and dont let go for 1 to 5 min or longer but they wont like it and stop nipping, mind over matter and a dog in most cases will not repeat what they dont like.
When you grab the jaw dont make a fuss and act like nothing is going on and let the pup fight but dont let go untill you are ready.
New dog mess with them when they are eating take there food out of the dish play with there mouth pick there butt up with there tail when there eating to get then use to it be for kids come. To this day I can walk up to my 15 year old dog and take food from his mouth with out a fight. It is all conditioning and training.

Got my female lab pup for my daughters first BD. They are fast friends to this day....five years later. The pup was always good with the baby and we had no "incidents". The key was monitoring there contact closely until they both knew what to expect from each other. It helped that the dog was faster than the kid for the first few months, she always knew when she'd had enough and when to get lost!!!
