Others may have better info, but I have older guns and was told there could be damage to the barrels. Not sure of the science behind that, could just be a myth. But I side with caution on that one...

If it's a Damascus barrel, you need to have someone qualified to check it out and make sure there isn't any damage to the barrel (cracks, breaks, dents). I've heard that these barrels are fine if in good condition, but that they're more susceptible to denting and breaking from side impacts. As far as putting steel out of it, I don't know that it would make much of a difference than lead, but then again I'm not a gunsmith. But make sure you get someone who knows what they're talking about, if the barrel's bad, then you could have a disaster on your hands.

Check out shotgunworld.com they have a lot of info on this. What I've learned so far while researching a few older shotguns of mine and friends is age condition, choke, choke type(fixed vs. screw in), all can determine whether your gun can be used for steel so a good gunsmith may be necessary. If not many people seem to have good luck with some of the other non-toxics like bismuth which while more expensive has about the same performance as lead and is generally considered safe for older guns especially fixed choke guns that steel can gradually loosen the choke on.

Lots of older guns have replacement barrels available that will handle steel. If it is an older Remington, Winchester or Mossberg, there are all sorts of barrels available.
