Met a local fellow on the river last week ... I'm spey casting away ... he's watching. Turns out he just got his first spey rod and had zero idea how to cast (didn't have the rod on him at the time).
So pull another off the roof of the car, clip off the fly's and off we go for "lesson number one." Can tell this is going to take more than one. No 'natural atheeleet here.'
Yesterday morning .... lesson #2. Not good ... can't quite get the idea of what a 45 degree angle (double spey), always wants to 'paint a mushroom' in the sky with his rod tip. (This unloads the rod .. not a good thing.)
About an hour of this and down comes another 'regular' on the bar. Gary advised that the game dept had dumped a LARGE number of summer re-runs in the hole a few days before. Makes (maybe) 4 casts and he's into his first fish.
Me-thinks it's time to go to plan B and actually put a hook on and 'practice/fish.' Didn't take my 'student' more than 5 minutes before he drove a #4 dumbell weighted fly into the back of my head!!
Thank God I'd had the sense of a goose to pinch down the barb. That said, a big/heavy fly will give you one hell of a headache when it slams into the back of your knogin.

Fred, You seem to be getting hurt a lot lately. Maybe I should come down there and start a riverside abulance service. Take care my friend.

Nuts for got to add! Mike I also gave Art the name of your shop/web site as he needs additional lines and he's looking at a 11-12 foot 6wt spey rod. Fred

Wow need to be careful with a newbie flinging a big hook around you, your self is enough danger, but I have found since converting to the spey I hardly ever hook myself anymore like I did with a single hander while casting.

Fred - BE CAREFUL OUT THERE!!! You should have left HIS line flyless while you concentrated on fish!
Even then, you never know...

Fred, One hot fall day while fishing Chums in B.C. I took a HEAVILY weighted bunny leech with 1/16 oz dumbells right between the neoprene suspenders on my back just left of the spine. I was chuck'n'ducking and forgot to duck. That welt turned into a 1 inch long blood blister that stayed around for 5 days. I learned my lesson. Always wear polycarbonate sunglasses, and watch my line. Duck if things start to head south.
Literally I feel your pain!

Just for giggles, anyone have an idea how fast (range) a fly is moving on the forward cast?

I'd estimate the one that whacked me was just short of mach 2...

I have a buddy with a chronograph. I'll ask him if we can do some testing.

Interesting point. Up in Washington/BC the use of 2 hander rods is pretty common. 'Down here' in southern Oregon up to a couple of years ago it was very unusual to see anyone that even owned one.
But that was then ....
