Sure, lots of help here what type of fly fishing species and waters will you be fishing.
Trout, salmon, steelhead, bass etc
Large, medium small rivers
lakes, ponds etc
Heck I will even send you some flys to get you started

Yes I will be trying all of that. I have 4 or more lakes in the area that are stocked with every-thing from Trout, tripiloids, steel head, and bass. Rivers from the Satsop to the Nooch, and many many more See I live in Montesano so I have SO much to pick from.
I think My biggest problem is what gear is good for a New-be, and what books should I start with? But I would never turn down gear, I want to learn.
Heck I'll drive to the Sportsman's wear house in Silverdal to get the stuff I need,if thats what it takes.
I'll try anything once and turn it into an addiction if I like it. Thanks I could use all the help I can get.

Well it sounds like a 9-10 foot fly rod in an 8 wgt may be what you should start with
What species will fish for first and the most ?
An 8 wgt is over kill for most trout in rivers but good for steelhead and bass.

I'd have to agree with BG on the first rod being an 8 wt. Too heavy for some things, but light enough that you could use in most of the situations you discribe.
You'll need a reel; don't want to break the bank? the good old Plug Supreme is still as bullit proof as they get .. and the largest (which is what you want) will still only cost you $50.00 +/_.
You will need at least one or two extra spools (backing: use 30#) as you'lll need a weight forward dry line and one or two sink-tips such as the Teeney T-200 and a T400. The T-400 may be over kill for the waters you fish. If so, consider a T-100 and T-300 to give you a wide range of options.
I suggest the Teeney lines as they really do work as advertised. I actually use a couple on my spey rods (skagit casting) due to the length of the head and otherwise short compact heads.
Choice of rod? A lot of moola you do NOT need to spend! Check Cabela's fly catalog for their 'combos;' actually very good kit and all you have to do is 'add the fly.'
Also take a quick trip to Angler's Workshop in Woodland, WA (shouldn't be too far from where you're at) - or give them a call - and see what they have in stock inthe way of Lami fly rods (or whom ever else). Humm ... wonder of Angler's WS has a web site?

Yeah - Orvis has a nice paper-backed book on Fly Fishing (several of them, in fact). Get the one that describes the equipment and how to "match" it, gives fly casting lessons, some simple knots (you need this info) and describes how to fish different types of water and different types of flies. It runs somewhere around 20 or 22 bucks at most book stores (Barnes & Noble, Border's, etc).
DON'T try to overpower your casts to "get more distance"!!! You do better starting off slowly, and getting your sense of timing and form!! An "easy", well-timed cast will get you much more distance than one you try to overpower.

GOOD ANSWER! Double Ditto this when you get to spey casting. Let the rod do the work!!

Thanks I have watched many of you sit out on the river and wind up a grate placement/presentation and you make it look so easy.
I'll see if i can get that book, and I found a friend that is going to lend Me one of his rods, I told him that I would be going for Steelhead and he said that he had just the thing. If I know him he'll bring Me a broom stick
Next Question can I clip the hook end off of a fly to practice with in My yard? or is it better just to jump out in the river and give it a go? Would it be the same?

Since you are in the PNW and want to steelhead fly fish I think this is the best book I have seen in 25 years of steelhead fly fishing on basic how to techniques particularly for PNW steelhead fly fishing:
I highly recommend it, as I have most of the steelhead fly fishing books ? Check it out I have had it since it came out and still reread sections of it.
Deke Meyer - Advanced Steelhead Fly Fishing
Put a small piece of yarn tied in on the end of your leader when practice casting on land. Don't use a fly if you do cut off the hook point.

Well I'd have voted for Trey Combs book(s) over Deke's as they were the 'standard' for everything else that followed. That said, yes, just use a bit of yarn on the end of your leader (see my "DARN that hurt" post). Given a choice, do practice over water rather than on grass.
'Water loading' is VERY different that 'grass loading' on a fly line.

I have all of Trey Combs steelhead books I find them lacking in specific steelheading technique and strategy and big on river, angler, and PNW fly history, which yes is good but for an angler just starting out steelhead fishing Dekes book is my pick. Heck he even has a good chapter on spey fly fishing and the book was written in 1992 !
My first steelheading book in 1980 was the Trey Combs book Steelhead Fly Fishing and Flys - 1976, I have my well worn copy right in my hand now and cherish it, its kind of tattered now with all my readings of it since 1980, time to tie up some annual small quantity (6) of Polar Shrimps the first steelhead fly I tried to tie myself in 81 from this book after purchasing a steelheader fly tying kit from Kaufman's Streamborn, spent a cold South Bend, IN winter teaching myself to tie flys, when there were no instructors, no internet, no video, or TV shows etc, just what ever books you could find through mail order and magazine articles, and on the river knowledge gained from other steelheaders.
Get the bottle of Merlot out, Treys book and the Polar Shrimp materials, have some new ideas for this years version. Will post up some pictures when done this weekend.
Cheers

I think my 15yr old sun is going to try it as well He wants to be just like me.
I,m going to try and get to Barns & Noble in the next week or so. All of you have a grate Thanksgiving.

Hey Jig,
I'm out in Yelm, but manage to get out your way a couple times a month. Next time I'm out that way I'll drop you an e-mail to see if you'd like to wet a line.

Yeah, Fred... it was inevitable. Once a wino, always a wino. But I know a minister, a nice guy, who had this derelict, Sam, that he took under his wing. When he used to give his speeches on the evils of drink, he would always point to the poor, unfortunate creature, Sam, as a prime example of what could happen.
Unfortunately, the poor unfortunate Sam died recently. But the minister now needs another unfrotunate creature to use as an example of the evils of drink. So, I passed on BG's name to him. So maybe, just maybe, there is some hope yet!

Ron:
Sounds good to me. I hope to have a rod soon, but I still have a lot to learn, before I hit the rivers. But as always I knew that I could depend on the people on this sight to help when called on.
