I've seen the cars parked in the areas where you park if you are going after smelt in Bremerton/Port Orchard area.

Do you catch these Bremerton smelt jigging off the docks, or by scooping them up with nets off the beach when they are spawning?

The Bremerton fishery is a dipnet fishery...never heard of anyone jigging them. Most of the fisheries for surf smaelt involve dipnetting. These fisheries occur for the most part at beaches where jigging wouldn't work. Tasty lil'morsels ....I'm tempted to try it this year!

Thanks for the info. There's quite a few good places for jigging surf smelt on this side of Puget Sound. My favorite is off the docks in the Oak Harbor marina. Other popular well-known places are in Cornet Bay docks and Everett marina. I have heard of people catching them off the Shilshole marina dock as well. I've personally caught them off the Westport boat basin docks to, but not huge numbers.

As I understand it, the smelt caught by jigging off the docks are recovering from spawning (post-spawn smelt). They spawn on the beaches (and get scooped up there) and then go to deeper water under docks to recover (and get jigged there).

I use the Sabiki herring jigs to get them (I think about 8 hooks on the rig). Fun stuff for the kids and people who are non-regular fishers. Plus, no license required!

I've observed small smelt schools in many marinas. Here's a link for more info:http://www.wdfw.wa.gov/fish/forage/manage/foragman.pdf
