A nice line for GL's close quarters work with that Torridge is a 9/10/11 WC belly and a 10' or 12' tip.

I have NEVER used a 10' or longer tip.
Shorter is better out here, I beleive that 9/10/11 would be too heavy for it, as the 7/8/9 WC loads it well with a Tip.

Actually that 7/8/9 WC your using is probably over loading that rod a little. What I said was a 9/10/11 WC "belly section" which will weigh about 330grns+/-5grns with a 100grn tip for a total of 430grns as opposed to your 7/8/9 WC which will weigh 525grns.

don't be hatin the wc, that line alone made jim v a small foryune and turned a bunch of people into 2 handed users.
it has a place in this world of spey, slicing and dicing lines is nice, but i would rather spend all that time fishing instead of glueing. just me is all bro'
We all started with Windcutters up here but then someone turned the light on

dang h-dawg,
i would rather fish an out of the box line that can cast 20' of t-14 instead of build one. i'll leave line building to the guys that have plenty of time on thier hands, between 3 kids, 2 in football and baseball (soph and sr) girl in college, drinking and fooling around with the wife ain't much time left to fiddle around with lines.
6 2 and even over and out h-dawg

Reshed, I misinterpreted what you were saying, yes the WC 7/8/9 overloads it a little but I never used more than a 5-6 T-14 tip with any of my spey rods. Needs more on river testing though.
Is that the line you sent me which I did not try on the Torridge due time and no available open spool to try with it ?
PNW fellows are way ahead of us on spey lines and rightfully so with those big wide rivers they throw sink tips on I can see why.

that is not really true many of us GL guys have been using those same skills in parallel with our pnw counter parts.
all it takes is asking questions to the right people and listening to their answers.
AAron has been my 2 handed mentor for a long (6 years) time.

Stu
Well I guess I need a GLs spey mentor because reading these boards for 4 years is not doing it nor reading Simons book, wish Mr. Evans and Redshed (Mike) were closer to me.
My local fly shop does not even stock spey rods anymore indicating they are a high end specialized area, maybe sell a couple a year, while they can sell to newbie fly fishers all kinds of single hand equipment and fly tying materials and lessons etc, and I thoroughly understand their position, I would do the same thing if I owned a fly shop around here.
Trying to see stuff to old timer like me is well like you know what ? LOL

Hal, possibly a good idea. Watched the Spey pages posts for upcomming clinics. In all honesty, a few hours with 'someone good' who ACTUALLY is a good teacher will replace months and months of frustration on the river.
