hi, ive got a little info on this subject from a couple of guys on this site and i was wondering what choke you guys use for steel shot. i have a mossberg 500 can i just use the chokes that came with it. and what chokes normally come with a mossberg 500 i dont know what is in. it the other 2 it came with are imp cyl and full.

I would guess theres a modified choke in there. For steel shot I shoot modified or imp cylinder chokes. I used to use modifed for jump shooting and imp. for decoying. Now I mostly just stick to imp. cylinder for everything and make more careful shots. Steel tends to stay bunched together more than lead shot so using a full choke for ducks is just overkill IMO.

I shot a 500 for years and did ruin the end of the barrell, but those were my eastern washington years of 150 to 200 ducks a year...probably would have worn out any barrell.

Sure looks like I am spelling Barrell wrong???

All mossburg chokes are stamped unscreww it out and it is along the out side top imp cyl is probly your best bet with 3" 1 1/8 oz #2s I use fast steel my self 1550 fps good luck and happy shootin Jim

the only one you have to look out for is the full and X full they state for steel or lead and I believe they are in the 835 only Jim

DON'T USE THE FULL!! That's how you can "ring" the barrel near the choke tubes. In fact, with larger sizes of shot (for geese), only use Improved Cylinder. It still gives tight patterns.

The steel doesn't "compress" to go through the chokes very well...
