clallam county fossils
      #221708 - 12/08/05 12:19 AM

headed out to clallam county today and found alot of fossils. Some are really good quality and have great detail. Dont know yet if anything I found is rare or not. Alot of clam fossils, probably 5 different kinds. Two clams were crystalized with Calcite. Found 4 whole snail fossils and three crab claws so far. I also collected around 100 calcivised concretions most of which I have not broke open yet, they can contain anything from clams, crabs snails and hopefully a nautiloid or two.I was surprised by the crab fossils I hadnt heard you could fing these the from anybody.
Here a few pics, I will post more as I get the specimens unwrapped.

I've found several crab fossils...usually just the carapace. Micro if you find anything that looks like a small oyster I'd really appreciate seeing them. The native or Olympia oyster is my scientific specialty.

I will keep my eye out for oysters Goose. I dont think I found any yesterday though. The closest thing I found to an oyster is the two on the left. did you find the Carapace fossils in Clallam county?

Micro you found the motherlode! Be nice to age the layer those fossils are in. There may be away to do that....I will peruse the geological data our DNR agency has available on their site. If they have online maps of geological outcroppings with age attached I can age them with a couple gps coordinates. Might even be able to generate a map showing the extent of that outcropping of ancient sea sediments.

Thanks Goose.

I would like to find out how old these are for sure. from the reading I have done so far there anywhere from 10 to 15 million years old. I believe they came out of the Hoko formation some maybe from the lyre formation.
heres some pics of the best crab claws I broke out of concretions so far.

I am headed out there again today. Ill take my GPS.
I dug and collected in several different layers along a long strech of beach and in the woods. I spent the whole day there and worked my arse off. I have heard of people collecting here before but I guess I just walked a little further then they did, climbed some pretty steep slippery hills too used my rock pick for a hold. Some of the concretions were in plain sight.

Here is a section of beach that I collected at. I walked up and down the hill all the way to the next point further to the left then the picture shows.

There was 4 layers in the stuff that looked like it had been moved above sea level by uplifting. The fifth layer was level and was also the layer that produced most of the concretions containing crab parts.

I found some information about how old the fossils are from a university website.

They are from the Tertiary period at the Oligocene Epoch in the Twin rivers formation. 28 to 33 million years old! wow!
