Clallam county fossils #3 new
      #224229 - 12/21/05 12:43 AM

Headed up to Clallam bay this morning for some more rockhounding. what a muddy mess I was today! I managed the whole day without hurting myself though. Checked out a new spot and found 23 fossil snails, several clams, and a 1 1/2 five gallon bucket full of concretions which more then likely hold several more snails and prehistoric mudshrimp(hopefully some crabs too). Sorry Goose no oysters yet.

Including todays collection I now have 11 different species of fossil snails, I also added one more species of fossil clam to make that total 16,and one more species of colonial worms brings them up to 3

Easy picking! Not really. I was just lucky here and happened upon these which are pictured here as I found them. The rock has eroded away from the fossils. Two fossil clams and two different species of snail.

This is a fossil mudshrimp claw.

some of the fossils I found today

These are conretions. I find them in sandstone mostly. They come in all sizes and shapes. Millions of years ago a creature died then was covered by silt, the oxegon content was low and when the creature decomposed it produced a gas that reacted with the calcite in the silt and solidified it. Walla! perfectly preserve fossil.

This is somewhat of a rare find. This is a fossil mudshrimp that is more complete then anything I have seen.

Some are close to the surface but for the most part I am digging my arse off all day with a rock pick.
