Mojo said: All true NATIVE rainbow trout in the Payette, Boise, Weiser and Owyhee (as well as the other streame of south west Idaho) are red bands. The populations have been so adulterated with hatchery trout (mostly McCloud River stocks)that there are few if any pure bred native red bands left. Do a Google on Red Band Rainbows.
If I did it right, I attached a pic of some redband trout I caught out of a creek in Oregon. If anyone wants to learn about trout or salmon in general a good book to read is Trout and Salmon of North America plus it has great illustrations. ISBN#0-7432-2220-2.

Newbee, dead on! The interesting thing about red bands is they retain parr marking much later in life than hatchery rainbows(some sub-strains never lose them). We had them in a creek on the ranch, and I never saw one over 12", but they looked just like that.

Note: I just read that Henry's Lake will extend the 2006 season through the end of November. If you can stand the weather (maybe it will be a mild November... probably be colder than a...) shouldn't be too many anglers there and the fishing might be great. I've been trying to locate a feathered jig that was quite effective. Black head with a dark blue body. One fellow told me he got them through Cabella's but I haven't seen them at their online offerings... Hook size was approximately an 8? Maybe a 10. Anyone know where to find these? I've looked locally but to no avail.

I agree that I have never seen a redband exceed 12" from a creek. According to ichthyologist Robert Behnke there are redbands that can attain great size. Oncorhynchus mykiss gairdneri is considered a Redband Steelhead, whereas Oncorhynchus mykiss irrideus is just a Steelhead, also real Kamloops trout are from the Redband family and we all have heard of Kamloops of the Gerrard Strain that can weigh upto 26lbs in only 6 years. Anyway this is arguable because of cross breeding, but just thought I would put it out there.

That book is absolutely marvelous. Illustrator Joseph Tomellerri is my personal hero and the inspiration for my own artwork.

The only thing missing on your illustrations, is the jig you got them on. . Nice art work.
