Might be wrong here, but looks very simmilar to what the Brits would call 'dappling.'

Fred, you're right on. But it's "dapping". I did a lot of it as a youngster during the hot days of summer with low water, and the rewards are outstanding!
By the way, there is a lot of Japanese Flyfishing, especially for the "miyame", another oriental trout. Yeah, and I even did some flyfishing in Korea with a cheap Japanese bamboo rod and some wet flies that I got on R&R (better make that "I&I")during the "police action". Many kinds of trout, char and Pacific Salmon in the Far East. And dapping was usually employed on the smaller waters when we were off line.
There are ways to have fun under even the most adverse conditions! Seemed strange to go fishing with an M-1 Bullet Launcher slung on your shoulder!!

Bob, you're correct on the spelling .. and I thought the first thing they taught all 'ground pounders' was how to "duck."

It looks like something I did as a kid. But that long ago I just used any long willow branch and tied a piece of string on it with a hook for worms.

A fellow on another FF board mentioned he has seen a japanese fellow on the Esopus River of NYS using Tenkara techniques, heck I used to fly fish there but never saw anyone with such equipment.

Reminded me of a fishing rod I wanted to purchase over in Italy. Lot of 'retired guys' fished off of pier, jetties, etc. with them. They were a telescoping spinning rod that ended up around 20-21 foot in overall length.
Add a spinning reel, lead, and a bit of clam for bait and out it went. Just couldn't figure how I was going to cart that around and check it in with my luggage for the trip home.

BG, how long has it been since you fished the Catskills?
By the way, on my last trip to the B'kill, I saw a Japanese guy and his very attractive daughter (in her 20s) nymph fishing. How did I know they were Japanese? Well, I just said a few words in Japanese, and they quickly responded! Then we had a nice conversation in English about the fishing. I was fishing dry flies VERY successfully, and they inquired about patterns, etc.
Nice folks! And that gal was a knockout!
