Glucosamine for Labs new
      #207229 - 09/27/05 09:54 AM

Anyone here ever used Glucosamine for their Lab's hip pain? My nearly ten year old girl has arthritis in her hips and the vet says Glucosamine will help the joint pain. I just started her on one pill a day, which is 750mg Glucosamine and 600mg Chondroitin Sulfate. I sure hope you can give me some success stories using the stuff. Thanks, Bill

I had used it for my older lab who passed about 3 years ago. We went to the health store though and bought the bottles for humans. it was alot cheaper. It works wonders for there hips though. Good luck and its worth it.

My 7yo lab/chessie cross take glucosamine for her shoulder. She used to have a nearly constant limp. She very rarely limps anymore. I think the pills help but I can't give them all the credit. She's not allowed to jump out of the truck anymore and I don't walk her off leash which means no more running full bore through the woods chasing bunnies.

I second what KK said. Glucosamine does wonders and buy the stuff for humans MUCH cheaper and it's the same. I have a really cool vet and she told us this.

My Vet also offered the advice that the human version was the way to go. Over a week and no sign of improvement yet. Seems like it was over a month before I noticed I wasn't in as much pain as before when I used the stuff myself. Bill

Roger on the glucosamine, but as noted above you can get it in combo with conglotin (sp??). Actually worked better; just don't 'over dose!!

Remember 'human sized pills' are just that! Unless you have a very large dog you'd probably want to cut the pill in half.

The glucosamine-condroitin works...on bad days or after a great deal of exercise give 'em a pain killer as well.

For the most part the dosages are very similar between dogs and humans.

Three months on it now and it does wonders for my 10 yr old Choc Lab. The big drawback is that she feels so much better that she thinks she's five years younger. She does a couple fast side to side movements and she is shot for two days, and can hardly get up after she lays down and stiffens up. The word "can't" just isn't a word a Lab understands.
All things considered, she is much better off with using the Glucosamine/Chondroitin. Bill

Bill it happens I know with my 13 year old Golden it did. I knew the day was coming and with any dog they become a major part of the family. When I made the decission to put him down, I had to pick him up and put him down out of the truck. He managed to walk into the vets office but he collasped on the floor once he got there and his tial was still wagging. It became a qaulity of life issue. His collar is at the bottom of the Boise river where he always loved to swim. Man do I ever miss him.....

Try to keep the activity down as much as possible. It's hard to do but it's for the best.

Similar solution, different condition...just got back from the vet with my lab. She thinks she might be having excess stomach acid...drooling a lot and ralphing every so often (sounds like me at about 3 am on the 1st)...prescribed Zantac for her...like a 1/4 to 1/2 tab for my 55 lb dog. Interesting.
