There is 'something new under the sun?' Furled leaders for new
      #230668 - 01/28/06 03:47 AM

spey length lines. Belong to a UK based fly fishing board and asked for some information on the use of furled leaders with spey rod lenght lines/casting. Lots of interesting answers, most to the effect 'if you ever get on long enough for that use, keep us posted.'

Comes a e mail from Rod Dibble: "Never made them up that way, but I'll make some up and send them over." Gotta admit, I LOVE getting goodies through the Royal Mail and these 'spey length' furled leaders are (visually) the cats meow. Called Bob Meiser (R. B. Meiser fly rods) and told him I'd gotten them: 'how many did you get?' Enough to share.

Looking forward to loading these things up and giving them a go in the next couple of days. Right now the wind is blowing 30mph or more out side the house .. think I'll take a 'pass' on today.

Before I forget, the leaders are 7 foot long with actual sterling silver rings 'woven' into the tip for attaching your tippet material. leaders are made of 6/0 Uni-thread. I suspect they could be made out of 'mono' is someone wanted, but that's just an educated guess. Actual cost? No idea as these were a gift from Rod.

NEAT, Fred. Just make sure the MF WIND dies down enough so you don't get personally damaged by falling trees and debris!

Take care!

Winds finally dropped to 'zero' here in southern Ashland. Off to look up the 'Marine forecast' for Brookings, et. al. Oregon. That's where you really get an idea what 'it's like' outside.

The Fly Fisher fly shop here in Lacy makes long furled leaders especially for spey casting to match all size lines.

Fred, The ones I have for spey are 9 or 10 ft. long. You add tippet to make them however long you want. George uses mono for floating leaders, all fluorocarbon for sinkers and a mixture of the two for level sinking ones. They actually work too.

Why would I want a furled leader instead of my beloved maxima green and fluor carbons ?

What do they cost ?

Well, if they cost ANY MONEY, you can bet ol' thrifty, fiscally prudent (read that "cheap") BG won't be interested!

The longest one sent to me was a seven footer done in 6.0 mono-core thread. The shorter ones for single hander rods were 5 footers.

I'm sold on them. While I don't have any in stock (yet) I think they work very well. I really like the ones from the guy in Lacy.

How much better do I need the normal 3-6 foot wet fly/nymph leader to turn over I ask ?

Actually ... probably a lot. Where (again, as I'm given to understand) the FL's come in to play is their ability to turn over heavy flys.

I'f you're using a single small fly, probably no big deal. Heavy fly/more than one; this is where they tend to shine.
