This has been my MO for many years and the fish agree, some good thoughts below to keep in mind. Mr. Mulch is from Portland, OR and a river fly fisherman for trout, salmon, and steelhead. This book is all about fishing flys in rivers.
Your thoughts, I even provided the definition of detritus for you.

"Fish do not eat works of art.The fly fisherman must realize there are many differences between a fly in the vise and one in a river. The fly in the vise is tied to appeal to its creator. It is viewed from the side and tied with asthetics in mind where proportions, scale, and symmetry play a major role. In addition the fly tier uses dry materials under the influence of air as a medium and gravity as a force.
The fish on the other hand sees the fly most often from the back or below and as a meal not a painting. It is seen in a liquid medium where materials appear and behave differently than in air. The greatest difference between a fly in the water and one in the river however is movement. The fly is seen over time and is not presented to a fish as a static image as we see them in a vise, but instead as an active creature influenced by forces of water. The fish observes the fly in context of water in motion.
Ideally the fish should see the fly as an active participant which swims in the current not as an inert detritus that happens to float by."
