The key to a shotgun for hunting is does it absolutely fit. That means when you throw it up is everything in line so that you do not have to adjust any part of your body or gun. This makes the gun part of you an extension of your vision thus allowing you the ability to make those quick shots without thinking. I learned this with a Mossberg 500, tradionally a "cheap" gun. That gun shot over 100 ducks per season for 9 seasons.
If you don't have any specific place to hunt next year let me know...I have a farm in Malone that we got specifically for waterfowl.

I have several expensive shotguns, but my duck and goose gun is a Remington 870 Express. A cheap gun. Fits me like a glove, and kills lots of birds. I totally agree with Fishdoc, find one that fits.
Pumps are more reliable if you are hunting in wet or cold weather than autos. I hear it rains a bit up there...

In your price range, Remington Express 870's or Benelli Nova's are great field guns. Try some out for fit and feel at your local gun shop. Close your eyes, shoulder the gun and open your eyes. You should be looking "straight" down the barrel, not canted, or seeing too much rib or looking into the receiver.

Hands down the 835 you can get it at the sportsmans in wetlands camo for 367. out the door my son just bought one last week of season. they fit nice and are work horses. I will never sell any one, one of my used ones and this is why I have rinsed them off in salt water and they are still pumping out the rounds. They come apart really easy and are easy to clean. You can get in to the blued beral for 279.00 but were talking water fowling get the dipped guns so you don’t have to deal with rust. Good luck. I like the safety on the mossburgs better as well they are on the top and not on the trigger guard just push up the ol thumb and your off. Jim W

Go with a Remington 870 super magnum express. You can shoot up to 3.5" shells. I picked mine up for just under $350 from Federal Way Discount Guns, best price around. I have killed it all with this gun, turkeys, geese, ducks, quail, and phesant. The gun is based off the 870 express which is the most popular shotgun ever made. The action is streamline. The only problem with the gun is it weighs about half a pound more than the Benelli Nova. The Nova is also a good gun. The rest of my family shoots them and have had no problems. The Nova is also around $400.

Rust can be a problem on any barrel regardless of finish. The blued barrels need to be wiped with a light coat of oil periodically. The annodized barrels can rust if the finish is scratched, and it can be harder to stop that rust once it gets going. No matter what you have, you gotta take care of it.

You can remove rust with a little 4/0 steel wool (NOT STAINLESS STEEL WOOL) and oil without damaging the bluing.

Living on the wetside your gun is bound to get wet. I have an older 870 wingmaster, and I would have to clean that everynight to keep the rust off if I was hunting two days in a row. Cleaning the gun isn't a bad habit, but I was more concerned about the outside of the barrel than the inside. It's kind of a pain if it rains, and you don't put a shell through, and you still have scrub it.
I second the steel wool. I had an older shotgun that was somewhat pitted on the outside, and it took most of the look away. I now keep steel wool with my cleaning kit.
I'm looking for a camo gun, because like Mojo said, camo is cool.

I have a Mossberg 500 that I bought new for under $200. It goes bang every time. It has quite a bit of rust on it from hunting tidal areas. That's why I bought it. It's cheap, it shoots straight, I don't care if it's rusty.

Definitely synthetic, especially if you go camoclad, then your whole gun would match. Only problem you might have is when you put it down, you might not be able to find it.

You can't go wrong with the Rem Express 3.5. If you want a gun that you can DEPEND upon and use in the snow, rain, mud, sand, freezing weather low teens, salt H2o,shoot old shells with poor quality brass thats seen a few wet hunts, has lots of choke's made for it,and will last a life time get the Rem. The barrels will show signs of rust due to the manufacturing methods but its a great gun. It is a tighter gun that the Nova the forarm will not rock as much and you can buy various barrels if needed I also have seen many a custom paint jobs on these guns. Get the 3.5 not just a 3 in that way if you want to shoot big Ts at winter honkers with out having to bump up to heavy shot if you can't afford the cost of it. I have the good fortune to have access to many diffrent configurations of shot guns but when I want a firearm to take on a hunting trip and I can only take ONE I pull out the Rem 3.5 and go hunting with the best of them.

Benelli Nova, i got mine at IG JOES for 314, camo 28" barrell, rem express was $50 more, felt good in my hands, but upland huntin, turkey huntin, carring the benelli is a lot easier, I love it, shoots slugs like a mo fo too, putting in for a special weopons permit over here that'll let me use it, or you could just go with the killin machine that benelli makes, a little more spendy but a sweet shotty
