Interesting you should post this topic; was a beach topic of conversation just a couple of days ago with Dave Roberts. Dave is "THE" Guide Guy on the upper Rogue.

That's his technk.

Had to use it twice. Really works like a charm. Mom taught it to me, she learned it from a doctor in the ER where she worked.

Yep I have had that done to me it didnt hurt. But I stayed out on the creek with the hook in my finger till I went to the doctor to have it removed.

Used it a lot back while guiding back in the mid 80's. With most saltwater flys you don't even have to yank, the fly will just back out. But if it is in a sensitive area or if the barb is a micro-barb (like on Tiemco freshwater hooks) then the yank is better.

No - I just use the ol' "Pliers Yank" while a couple of guys (three is better) hold the "victim" down. That also gives me time for a good head start after he gets to his feet.

Just kidding. The newer technique got a lot of attention when they first came out with it. I never had the "opportunity" to try it, and I hope I never do!

I just don't care for "Fly Earrings!"

I have a hook removal "kit" in my boat and had the opportunity to have it used on me last year. Worked like a charm and no pain....for which I was grateful.
