I have had real good luck by breaking them in a little bit slower, than just hittin' the 'ol pit.
My method is to use a .22, either rifle or revolver, preferably revolver, with .22 bird shot. Then you don't have to travel so far to find a place.
Take some food treats, and work on come, sit, etc, with treats, and when you have done that for a while, toss'em a treat, and shoot the gun behind you ONE time. After they settle down, use the food and repeat. Make a game of it. Throw a ball for him, and as he takes off after it, shoot. Devise other games, so that their mind is on the game when you shoot. I used this method even with my little english cocker, and I have never had a dog come up gun shy.
Just my opinion.
Good Luck

He's probably OK, but try the gentle method. It has always worked for me.

Take Nav's advice. Take him for a walk on a logging road somewhere and fire a .22 now and then.

snoqualamie pass at has a good place to shoot, its the exit before summit, i think its the denny ashael exit, ya turn right and go about 7 miles on dirt, i started my dog with a cap gun, while food was being served, start out far away, move closer get em used to the noise, get so you can be about a foot or two away, then move to the 22, then the shotgun, now every time he hears a shot I can't hardly control him, he thinks dad's the best shot in the world, oh well something to work on during the off season

I've heard of a place called 'Crescent' near Monroe, off Lewis, where you can train dogs (ask at Sky Valley Traders)...basically farmland...no guns, but you can use the cartridge poweered dummy launchers...they give a pretty good bang.

I've been watching this thread with morbid curiosity. I have seen MANY people totally ruin awesome dogs by trying to "gun break" them. You do not EVER want to break a dog! You want them to become accustomed to things through easily and slowly introducing them to these things. Properly done this exercise should take months not days. You are rishking scaring the crap out of your dog, which is what makes them gun shy. Contrary to some peoples beliefs, dogs aren't naturally afraid of gunshots. They just don't know what that loud noise was. I agree you need to expose your dog to gunshots. Start with a cap-gun, but do it outside, and a long way off. Play with pup while someone else shoots thye gun. Slowly over a couple of days, work your way to the dog. You may have rushed this already, but this is where you are. NEVER sneak up an bust a cap behind the dog. Always remember you are not tryong to startle or scare pup, just introduce him to noise. Cpmfort and praise often as he is exposed. Next step is real guns. Drive through the parking lot of the trap and skeet club whil a shoot is going on, with the windows up and the heater or A/C on (muffles the sound). Then leave. Pet pup. Then drive back through with the heat or A/C off (windows up). Don't push it. Later try it with the windows cracked. On another day leash the dog and get out of the vehicle, petting and praising all the while. The nice thing about gun clubs is there are many guys that are hunters, and they will all tell you what a nice looking pup you have.

You got it made now. Just take pup back to the gun club a few other times between now and next season, so pup remembers.

NEVER expose pup to high powered rifles or large calibre hand cannons. The report is much louder than a scatter gun, and hand guns reports are sharper due to the shorter barrel.

Good luck with the pup.

Leoft aofp

Sorry but I meant to say "Right On." But it was one one of those moments and I chose to type crap instead of something any where near comprehensible by any one but an imbecile.. No one even due to the hurriednees of work makes posts like you do unless they choose to. Could you please choose to post with some modicum of correct spelling and grammar? 3 out of ten words correctly spelled would be a start...don't worry about them making sense as the incorrect choices don't anyway.

remember dogs learn by association get some live pigeons tie a string on his leg and let the dog eat it and get really crazy about it! then in another session have a friend about a hundered yards off shooting a small caliber rifle or shotgun while the dog is fetching the pigeon you have been throwing out for him! if the dog is comfortable with it have your friend move in closer gradaully! birds are the key !!!! if you have any other ? pm me! i will help!

Going to have to train the dog not to eat pigeons sometime down the road.

freeze the bird 1st, i'm dealin with a hard mouth dog now, he's gettin better, but it sucks when you don't kill the bird, he thinks he has to finish them off, its pretty fun to watch when ya got a big ol winged honker running away and a lab with his ears pinned back and that look in his eye
