Almost ready for my first try new
      #154199 - 12/11/04 07:27 AM

OK, I went out and bought a tumbler and 3 grades of grit. Then I collected pretty rocks from my yard. Now I need to figure out which rocks to discard so I don't put them in the mix and ruin it.

Is there any easy way to identify the bad ones?

I watched some show last week about digging for Black Opals in Nevada. Sounded like a good road trip. Anybody ever done that?

old rock hound trick is to LICK them.. if smooth you can tumble. Also try to keep the same type of rocks together because of the different hardnesses.

I am so glad I wasn't drinking when I read that btf1. Almost fell out of my chair with mirth!

The different hardnesses is what I'm concerned about. How the heck can I tell the hardness differences? I collected pretty pinkish white quartzy looking ones, green ones, white with black stripes, black with white stripes, ones that are brick colored and even a couple that look like calico.

sort by color
Born is right but if you see a golden nugget.. it could be corn. DO NOT LICK the corn

I'm a new rock hound also. I'm going to try and find Quartz crystals this summer. I have heard of someone in North Bend with a crystal mine. Pay to dig. Also I have hunted in the area of northern Nevada where some of the mines are. Iam planning on a road trip there this late spring.

Lots of interesting rocks on public ground in Nevada. Even some Gold nuggets if you know where to look.. Saw a junk of Gold laced quartz the other day that a fella had found out in the desert. 17 oz of gold in it. Funny thing was when I ask him where he found it he said up round zipper creek. He's weaking as I type. A few more gallons of the Jim beam down the funnel and he should be spillin the beans 2nd_Rod_Stamp just got herself a metal detector and tels me we can go looking for rocks when the fish quit biting. Why would I want to do that.

D-Dog, a buddy from work went down around your place a month or so ago and found a 4 oz nugget with his detector. Has a coil the size of a garbage can lid on it. Paid for the detector and all the upgrades in 1 weekend. I'll put a GPS tracker on his car next time he's headed down.

You also want to make sure you get the level right in the barrel so they tumble and don't just slide. Also make sure you have a bunch of different sizes of rock so you will get into the smaller areas while polishing. If you are a having fracture problems with the rocks you can add a handfull of those plastic BB pellets and it will stop them from craashing together and cracking.

Seems like my first barrel of rock took me 4 grits and 6 weeks of constant rolling on a 6lb tumbler. But the results were Whoooo! Some of the stuff has such a fine polish it looked like it was covered with liquid....

Do NOT dump the barrels down a sink to clean the stuff, it will harden in the drains just like cement, and the only way to clean them will be to replace the drain pipe.
