yeah, it had a ventral clip, and summers are the only ones with that and no sex organs other than a couple orange slivers of what will be eggs in months to come. that is the earliest that i have ever seen one. it also was confirmed by the fish checker. there are a pile of bright winters still around also.

I've caught a couple summers in the Sandy during late February. Just like ifish365's, extra missing fins ID'd it and the lack of mature internals. Sure is a nice bonus to get one that early!

Does anyone have any good photos of ventral cliped summers?
I've caught a few summers and never noticed this. interesting...
I always wondered how they distinguished the runs apart.
Is this only on the nestucca?
I suppose hatcheries all have their own method of marking.
Btw 57 summer steelhead counted over willamette falls so far.

certain rivers have certain clips. ask a biologist or fish checker what your rivers clips are. nestucca summers have an adipose and vent clip. the late winter brood stock have an adipose and right maxilary clip.

yeah, small potatoes. i'm not very good at figuring out electrical stuff.. figuring out how to get fish to bite is much more fun. just curious, did ya get my pm about the cure? not a big deal, i was just curious what the rave on this site was about that cure. p.s. the lady just fixed the date on the cam.

scud... Besides the typical adipose clip, there's left and right ventral fin clippings and left and right maxillary clips. Different variations of clips to ID what strain and what run. Many of the bigger rivers have two or three releases that could be broodstock or different strains of hatchery plants as well as summer/winter runs. Each river system typically has there "own" markings meaning that a adipose/left ventral might be a summer in one, but, a winter broodstock in another system.

I know that, at least until 2000, the Clackamas River had 3 different sets of clippings to identify the summer run.

Many times you can email the WDFW or ODFW and ask them what markings are in said river. Sometime within the fiscal year they will get back to you I've had much better response asking about one river at a time. At least you get it straight from the source.

I realize the photo is of a hatchery fish but why is it all dragged up on the sand and rocks? Why not just bonk it turn it loose? Not trying to be a dick but it seems like a waste of game with the fish being treated that way.

the fish was released un harmed. i'm sure that is alot easier on a fish than being hooked and reeled in. i hook and release alot of fish and that will not change anytime soon. i did not rub sand in his gills or beat it up on the bank, if it makes you feel better i will not post any more pictures of fish that i release. a waste of game? right after that pic was taken i deep hooked a small buck and tagged that one, if i would have released that fish it would have been a waste of game. do you know how many boat fisherman put nates in a net and bring them in the boat to take the hooks out and then release them? i think that would be alot harder on these fish, anyways, i try to be as easy on fish as i can, no more pics of released fish from me.

I think that you need to chill. I merely asked a question. Had I known your skin was so thin (think ziz-zag) I would have worded it differently. Oh and please no threats of no more pics stud. As far as my moniker I gave it to myself it wasnt bestowed upon me by the more esteemed anglers on this board but thanks for trying to belittle me L2F. Save the emoticons for your pals.

A second vote for RA on this subject. If you intend to return a fish, don't! take him/her out of the water. Also skip the 'hero photo shoot' holding the fish out of the water improperly supported (which is damned near impossible to do). Remember, a fishes 'structure' is designed to support him in a water enviornment (sp?).

Time to chill fellows.

doesn't the hook and fight do more damage though? further educate me if you know something i do not, i understand the point of view, but it seems that you sould also be anti catch and release if you think an out of the water photo is hard on the fish, i really am curious. i would like to also hear your catch and release point of view, thanks.

As far as I know there is no scientific studies regarding mortality rates due to taking a picture of a salmonid out of water. Fred I am sorry but I have to disagree.

Gooose I am going to disagree with you on this because most any clipped steelhead that has a photo op with me usualy has a date with the "Robin Stick!" Sorry fred there is no scienticfic evidence that supports t
