Scientific Anglers Mastery Series line?
      #238330 - 03/17/06 01:48 PM

Looking for your thoughts on Scientific Anglers Mastery Series GPX fly lines. I owned exactly one Scientific Anglers fly line (many moons ago) and always thought it was mediocre. I sold 30 million Cortland lines when I worked in the fly shop back in the early 1980's, and have always liked and used them. Well I liked them until I bought a 555. Anyway I bought a Scientific Anglers Mastery Series GPX for my 5 wt today, and I was just looking for comments from you all...

Whadda ya think?

I have it and use it. It floats fine and since it is a half size bigger it throws bigger flies just fine. But since I only try to fish with dries it really don't seem to make much difference on what I use. But it keeps you from going up a size to throw flies.

I often chuck streamers and nymph rigs when the fish aren't looking up. I primarily fish dries though. I'm switching out from a 555 which is also 1/2 size over, so the change should be transparent. I cast it in the yard, and it seemed to cast just fine.

I was concerned about it's flotation (as with all floating lines). It's new to me, and I just wonder...

Interesting comment(s) vis a vis the 555; exactly the same thoughts coming out of the UK fly boards. Not 'happy campers.'

I'd have to say that having been a Cortland guy for 30 years, they better change something quick. They haven't chased technology as their competitors have, and it shows. I hope Cortland steps back to the plate, but I really like RIO lines, and I can support them financially instead.

We'll see where this SA thing goes. If I like it great. If not it's back to RIO.

I also have switched from the 555 to the GPX. Too much memory in the 555. You have to stretch it before every use. But the best line out there that I have found is the 444. I had one on a reel for about two years and didn't use it but when I did it came out straight arrow.

Jim, after a couple of hours of use, does the tip STILL FLOAT? Regardless of which line I use (and I tried MOST of 'em) I still have the problem of a "sinking tip"!

The BEST one I had was an old Scientific Anglers about 40 years ago (probably Version 1) which was GREAT! But ever since, I have had this problem. It really hurts when fishing dry flies!

And taking time to stop, hang the line between 2 trees, wipe the line down, dress it, etc. uses up too much valuable fishing time! It usually happens right in the middle of a hatch, when the fish are TURNED ON!!

I discussed that exact issue with my local fly shop proprietor. He stated that every line will start wicking water up from the end, and after a full day of fishing the tip section will sink. Braided core lines are worse than gellspun core, or mono core. His perspective is that SA will be the first ones to solve this problem.

I was thinking of putting a drop of superglue on the end, and see if it wicks in a little, possibly solving the problem. Whatta ya think?

Yeah... I tried Aquaseal, and so far, NADA!

I just want a line that FLOATS! Is THAT so BAD!

Bob, if we figure this mystery out, we'll be rich! Seems we can cure life threatening diseses, shoot rockets into outer space, make fabric that breathes and is still waterproof, develop Velcro and duct tape, and trasnplant organs, but we can't build a line that floats all day...

I hope you all could come up with a solution. I just put some dry fly floatant on the first 10 feet when it starts to sink. But it should be cleaned and dressed before every use if possible. Besides water wicking up the line you also get dirt off of the water. You don't see it but it's there.

But you can apply line cleaner in the middle of a hatch. You just have to buy the right brand, and there are a few out there that will let you do just that. Scientific Anglers has one that works that way.

Thanks, Jim - but that's what I do now all too frequently. Sounds like NO manufacturer has been able to do it (as they all have been claiming). It's not a big deal, but is a pain in the butt, and cuts down on fishing time.

I have been using GPX on my 4wt. Sage. It has worked very well for me. The guy I fish with is a Cortland fanatic. He seems to have to change out his line a bit more frequently though.

I really like the GPX more than rio because it holds it's slickness a lot longer than Rio. I fish a lot in saltwater which is a lot harder on your line than fresh and i have tried all sorts of lines and the ones that have held up for me have been SA, Sage and Wonderline. Both cortland and Rio lost their slickness months before the other 3 so i steer away from cortland and rio.
