Looking for something different to do, so I was wondering if there were any bottom fish in Puget Sound worth fishing for?
Any input anyone?

Ling Cod Season is just around the corner, other than that the pickins are slim. FWIW, I wouldnt eat any bottom fish caught south of Edmonds.

Halibut is also not very far from now. You can pick up small flatfish although they are usually pretty small.

Bottom fishing in Hood Canal was pretty good, back when it was open.

If you have a boat you can try around the riprap rock walls at Edmonds, Shilshole or any other marina for Lings starting May 1st thru June 15th. Or fish the flats away from those marinas a ways for sand dabs and other flatfish. Most of the prime easy bottom fishing has been decimated and what remains requires a boat that can keep you safe in rough open waters. Certain places do get a spring run of perch spawners that can provide a lot of fast fishing. Keep an eye out around the piers and marinas for these fish schooled up around pilings.

Interesting... In a semi-related question, how small a boat would you take out on a decent day. I am waiting on the new boat till after the tax man is paid.

Seattle waterfront a 16 foot skiff will work fine as long as you watch the weather. Longer runs to Possession or the islands you'll want a more seaworthy boat. Take a look at Trophies, Arimas and Boston Whalers. I have a Smokercraft 17.5 footer with a 75 horse for sale that is probably the minimum for making those long runs with the risk of foul weather.

Thanks for the input. It has always made me wonder when I have seen the guys out in 12' and 14' out fishing out there off of Edmonds. I might take my 12' if I stayed close to shore, but it would have to be a real nice day.

I've caught really nice sand dab from Ponit no point in the winter.

Almost forgot...that was from shore. Also caught a really nice cabazon from shore while fishing for salmon. The thing nailed the buzz bomb only three feet from shore just as the sun was rising. After I cleaned the fish at home, the head and spin weighted 16lbs. It was a great fish. I've also caught really nice cabazon from my boat just west of Foulweather. Squid works really well for the bottom fish.

Explore a little.....try the piers and docks which have lighting at night. Try some topwater bass gear or just a spin bobber with a big white streamer around the lighted areas. Inside Puget Sound some rockfish school up just like Black Rocks on the coast. You may also be surprised bi ling cod taking your near surface presentation.
