Tippet Size for B-Runs
      #238784 - 03/20/06 11:32 AM

I was going to break out the fly rod for steelies but I've only caught A-runs on 8-10lb tippets. I was wondering what the best tippet size to use for B-Runs would be so I can get them in quickly and release them effectively.

Dom, I use 12. I think a lot depends on the rod, the water you fish, and if you are wading, or fishing from a boat. Are you thinking the South Fork?

From a boat, the 8-10# should be fine. On the beach, 10-12 may be more appropriate. Like your area, the Rogue (which most folks don't know) also has a "B" run of summer fish. These usually enter the upper river in October(ish) and will be considerably larger than the 'standard' summer fish.

These fellows will pop 8# leader like it was dry pasta.

12 maxima will handle a 20-30 lb river fish no problem.

Dom!

I would use nothing less then 15 maxima up there! Even at 15 you will loose several just because of the flow. to be effective, go with a buddy and do it tag team. One guys hooks and plays while the other nets. When the water gets moving just hold the rod tip up and let the fish swing into the bank. Believe me it works!
