Westport bar in Washington new
      #238762 - 03/20/06 08:45 AM

I'm thinking of taking the 17' SuperVee to Aberdeen when I go visit my son and grandkids and was wondering if anyone has good knowledge of the bar out at the mouth of Grey's Harbor. I want to launch out of Point Brown. I printed out the tide sheet and was wondering when is the best time to go out and in. Last time I didn't know about the bar and made it out ok but felt like I was up on the hill sledding going out and then coming back in I just rode a wave in around the corner. From a distance all I could see was breakers and didn't know if I could find a slot to go thru. Needless to say I didn't really enjoy that part of the day. I will be fishing April 2-4. Trying to decide if I want to drag the boat 1200 miles to try it again. Thanks

I've done it before in my 17' Whaler, but that's when I was young and dumb and it was summer time on a calm morning. I would not recommend it this time of year in a small boat. But that's me.

I've been told the worst time to cross the bar is on an outgoing tide. Reason is you have outgoing tide meeting incoming swells, creates crazy waves.

Guys go out in that size boat all the time but I wouldn't recommend it. I doesn't take much for the bar to get rough. The guys who do it are locals that can wait out a storm and don't have to worry about going on any given day. For someone going for the weekend there is to much of a chance of having some slop. I would think about going down to Willapa Bay or fish inside the bar when it opens in September. The charter trips are also reasonable and a lot safer.

We decided to play it safe and fly over and fish from shore. Thanks for the input.
