Anyone out there have any suggestions for shooting tighter groups with my 50 Cal TC Hawkins. I have played with the powder charge from 80-110 grs. of RS Pyrodex. I have only used 350 gr. maxi hunter bullets. I can only get a 8-10" group at 50 yards with a solid rest. I can't even think about hunting deer with it next season unless I get it dialed in.

Try different bullets and charge loads. If you aren't grouping tight, it might be the bullet.

Try Precision Rifle's EXTREME HP in 300 grain and Powerbelt Bullets 295 Grain Aerotip. If those don't fly, try the Hornady bullets, I have a buddy that loves 'em.

Yeah, there is one problem with T/C Hawken rifles, and that is the fact that many (if not all) have a twist (1 in 48") that is a "compromise" so you could shoot both round balls AND conicals.
Like most compromises, they don't work out too well for either. It's too fast for round balls, and too slow for the longer conicals. And the shallow depth of the rifling doesn't help much, either, as "stripping" can occur, too.
You have to really play with powder charges to get the right speed to stabilize the bullet to a reasonable degree.
Good luck, and it's to the point where I simply use round balls in mine. They work fine for white tails. I use 100 gr. FFG in mine and get "adequate" accuracy, but nothing to brag about. 2-3 inch groups at 50 yards.

I hear ya! I had the same problem with two T/C Renegades. Just try another conical. T/C Maxi-Balls work great for me, but I tried T/C Maxi-Hunters and they fly hi, low, left or right. I can see why modern ML's took over the market! Good luck finding your hunting load. Bill

I tried to find the Extreme HP and the Powerbelt bullets, but the local sporting goods store does not stock them.

Are you shootin stock sights or did yo upgrade? I upgraded to the T/C peep sight and it made a big diff...just a thought!

I upgraded to the peep also, but found the hole too small for huntin'. Can't get enough light through it. Tried taking the aperture out, and just using the base, but couldn't see the ring then. What'd you do???

Drill out the aperture. Make it bigger gradually. You will find a nice compromise that works for you where you can see through it. Then darken the drilled-out center with instant bluing or brass black as appropriate.
Actually, you don't have the rear sight in focus - just look at the front sight, and the eye naturally wants to center it in the strongest light coming through the hole. Don't even try to focus on the rear sight.
I shoot better with these sights than I do with a scope!

I am shooting with the stock sights, but I do like shooting peep better. I am mostly concerned with getting a decent group. I shoot from a bench with a good set of gun rests. I am looking foreward to trying these new bullets and see if they make a difference. Does Thompson make a peep upgrade, or did you use a aftermarket company?

T/C makes a peep sight upgrade for my Thunderhawk, check the website for your specific gun....Welchers in Tacoma suggested the upgrade as one of the Welcher boys used ot shoot the same gun...he said it made a diff and I don't disagree..I've had my T/C Thunderhawk in .54 for about 10yrs now....great gun!

You might want to try the Buffalo Ballet, I used to have a hawken and that is the one that I found that worked for me, I think that I used a 84 grain load
