on the B-run I've got a a selection already but a 6wt is the highest wt rod I have so if I did purchace one (hopefully before next spring)I would think 8wt but I don't want to get one that won't do the job. any and all suggestions would be appreciated.

For big water steelies, an 8 wt is minimum. If you plan on fishing the Salmon or Clearwater much, I'd look at a spey rod. Check out Mike at Red Shed Fly Shop, on the Clearwater. He'll steer you right. Not many people know more about steelie fishing on the fly.

Thanks for the info I'll check him out see what he suggests. as for theupper salmon the fish I see out of there are dinks commpared to the clearwater so I think the 6wt should work fine there. but if I get a 8-10wt I'd probably use it so as not to tire them to much. I'll stick with the spin outfit till I figure it out. thanks again.

Well, I have used a 6-weight a lot on our smaller rivers back east here, but it is a tough rod and has a good backbone, and I have taken fish up to 10 lbs. without too much of a problem. (I also took a 20 lb. lake-run spawning brown trout on it and really had my hands full!) And I landed all these fish as fast as most guys do with heavier rods. But I wouldn't plan too much on doing it on a bigger river.

Pokyman, When I fish the upper Salmon, I use my 8 weight. There are plenty of fish in the 12 to 14 pound range, and if they get you in any current, you are screwed. Since I generally catch and release up there, I like the power my 8 weight gives me to land the fish fast and revive them with less stress.

Big water steelhead over 10 lbs = 9 wgt rod minimum
Small water steelhead under 10lbs = 7/8 wgt rod
