i beat my best day
      #240061 - 03/28/06 05:05 PM

my day started by seeing where i wanted to go, the road was closed, i was bummed. i jammed down river to a stretch that i have not fished this year, as i drove down there i realized that no one else had been there either. i had to break some pretty big trees with the front of my truck. i got down to the river and knew it was gonna be a good day. i started fishing and could not believe that i passed a couple of great holes without a bite. i went about a 1/4 mile without a bite, i couldn't beleive this. i finally get bit, fish on... fish gone. next cast same story, but this one went around a rock and busted my leader. third cast was a charm, about a seven pound hen. the rest of my day was pretty fish on. i ended up landing 15 and losing 6, an outstanding day! i took a couple of pics, sorry about the quality. one is like where's waldo but it's a fish, the other one was me thinking i couldn't beleive i was the only one down there with all of it to myself, so i took a pic.

Sigh .... FINALLY hooked two on the fly rod yesterday ... both old DARK (and then some) summer runs. Only real "good news" was the river water has now warmed up to 45 degrees.

Cold water has been the major problem on the upper Rogue; hopefully the warmer water will kick the fish into gear. (Like I should get so lucky.)

good deal, any steelhead hooked on a fly rod is an accomplishment. i'm done with winters, i ended the season going 5 for 11 today, one was a hatchey summer, the earliest i have ever got one. i'm taking a break from the rivers for a couple of weeks when i start on springers. i'm going to spend my fishing time with lingcod and sturgeon for a while. hope ya get some fred, my good friend lives in grants pass and he saw a guy get a bright one when he was driving by, hopefully it keeps picking up for you.

Fred what are the salmon returns going to be like on the Rogue this year?

Too early to tell at this point. That said, a few spring kings are already 'staging' in the lower Rogue. We've actually already had one through the counter here in Medford. Earliest (my understanding) that one's ever hit the upper river.

We really don't see much in the way of the spring run even in the lower river until late April-early May. That said, the size of both the spring and fall run of kings has been dropping over the past couple of years.

This will 'link' you to the fish statistics for the Rogue at Gold Ray dam; the other link is for Winchester dam on the north fork of the Umpqua.

our fall and spring chinook runs have been great the last couple of years. we had a weak winter run last year, but it was great this year. keep up the reports fred, you fishing a spey? i was thinking about getting a 7 or 8 wt fly rod for late summers when they get easy to catch in august, i want to use floating line only so i may ask some advise on weight of fly, etc later. summers sound fun on a fly. hopefully you get some fish soon. lookin forward to a report.

Ifish, I'm a spey line chucker 95% of the time. The other five percent are single hander fishing right at my feet. The one place a 2-hander (save for what are called 'switch rods') limit you is fishing in close to the near bank. There the one hander still holds sway.
