Yeah, DON'T MESS WITH THE EATIN' END OF A NORTHERN!!

I discovered the fact when, as a kid about 7 or 8, icefishing with some relatives, one of the guys caught and kept a small northern about 2 feet long, and dropped it on the ice. He then sat down on his pad on the ice, and absentmindedly set his hand on the ice behind him - right into the mouth of Mr. Northern, and let out a yell.

Unfortunately, when he tried to pull his hand away, the northern clamped down on his thumb, and blood was spurting EVERYWHERE! He ripped his thumbhail open trying to get the northern loose (the northern's teeth had penetrated it with a couple of teeth). He was bleeding like a stuck pig from that little hammerhandle, as we used to call 'em.

Well, that was the end of the excursion - we had to get him to the doctors for sewing up and a tetanus shot!

I learned a GOOD lesson about northerns that day, many years ago! And I have taken lots of 'em in the 36 - 45 inch class, but I really respect their "business end"!

"And I have taken lots of 'em in the 36 - 45 inch class, but I really respect their "business end"!"

Had to laugh when I read this. Tons of years ago was on a bus. trip (first) to Anchorage. Guys (I had the money they wanted) said: "ever fished in Alaska?" "No." Lets do an over night charter fleight." Etc.

Anyway, the pilot said the the fish (mid-night sun stuff) really wouldn't kick into gear until at least 10pm and would pretty much die off by about 2am. He was dead on!

That aside, we each exited the float plane with a full can/bottle of 'bug juice,' little knowing two or three would have been a far better "plan A." Warmer then heck, sweat like a piggie, and the deet would be off you in about 30 minutes. Spray, slosh, etc., 30 minutes later ..

Ya, we all ran out about an hour before the float plane was due back. Only 'salvation' was to strip off our clothing and wade neck deep into the 'landing lake' to keep the bugs at bay (or at least give them a far smaller target).

So we're out there in our shorts casting for 'trout' (or what ever might be in this lake when we (collectively) hook our first (of many) chain Pickeral (sp?).

Thought soon occured to the three of us we're standing neck deep in water with our collective dorks hanging out with a bunch of hungry fish cruising about!

One of the longest hours of my life!!!

Yeah. I know the feeling. I once heard an Ojibway say, "They can make 'doe' out of 'buck'" (and he was dead serious!)!!
