Anybody have any advice? I'm thinking it would be a good thing to control the future little SHE DEVIL

Crate training is a good thing. I jacked this from another site. It was faster.......

Make sure the crate isn't too large - just big enough to fit their sleeping blanket or mat. Dogs do not like to soil their beds because they would be forced to lay in the mess. It works, and while in these confines, most pups will control their bladder and bowels for a longer time than we would expect. Young puppies, at 8 or 9 weeks of age can often last for 7 or 8 hours, however, we would never recommend leaving them unattended in a crate for that long in most circumstances.
During housebreaking, whenever the puppy is inside the home but cannot be watched, he is placed in the crate. This might be while you are cooking, reading to the children, or even away from the home. The last thing you do before you put the puppy in the crate is take him outside to his favorite spot. The first thing you do when you take the animal out of the crate is another trip outside. No food or water goes in the crate, just a blanket and maybe a chew toy to occupy his time. Overnight is definitely crate time. As your faith in the puppy grows, leave him out for longer and longer periods of time.

Most people do not recognize an important advantage of crate training. It does more than just stop the animal from messing in the house. It also teaches the puppy something very important. The puppy learns that when the urge to urinate or defecate occurs, he can hold it. Just because the pup feels like he needs to relieve himself, the pup learns that he does not have to. This is thought to be the main reason why puppies that have gone through crate training have fewer mistakes later on.

There a few important things to remember with crate training:

Make sure your crate or cage is properly sized for your puppy. If it is too big, he will go to a corner to relieve himself and lay in the non-soiled part of the cage. If you have a wire cage, consider a divider panel, which reduces the size of the cage during training but can be removed to allow your pet more space after he is trained.

Do not put food or water in the cage.

Take your puppy outside immediately after you open the cage.

Whenever your puppy is not under the watchful eye of a responsible family member, he should be in the cage. This is difficult since you will want your new puppy "around," but it's well worth the few weeks it will take to train him. No puppy should have the run of the house until he is completely trained.

Here a little tip from me, You probably don't want to buy more than one crate, so just get one thats big enough for when pup is full grown and put in a divider of some sort. That way he can't go into the corner of the large sized crate to piss like the article said.

Southfork, I have a smaller sized crate for you to use till your dog gets a bit bigger. Perfect for a lab pup.

I don't don't have much to add other than to agree that you want to make sure the initial crate is on the small side or has a divider.

Benny you just echoed almost word for word what Mojo told me yesterday on the phone Joe I'll take you up on that crate. What's the best way to section off a bigger crate when she gets bigger?

Mike with this crate, the next one you get will be her big one, and it will be time when you make the move. You won't need to section it off. If you do, sheet metal is your best bet. She'll eat anything else.

so what do you recommend for discouraging dogs from peeing on certain things outside? cutting off his dingus is not an option.

He likes peeing through fences....presents a challenge in an otherwise routine day. Also tests his distance and accuracy. Thinking I might experiment with electric impluse unit I have connected to a few select metal ornamental garden fence sections I picked up from Lowes. Maybe a few jolts to his pistol will get the idea across. Never had any faith in those spray on repellent chemicals.

One more reason to have a female. Millie is shy, so she prefers to hide in the bushes when she goes.

One more quick tip, never punish your dog with the crate. If they do something bad dont put them in it as punnishment. My lab gets a treat everyday when ita time to go in his crate. He knows when I reach for the treat bin it time to go in, so I dont even have to say anything anymore.

It took a total of about 5 seconds to crate train her.

This dog was worth every penny and the wait.
