I have a Orvis Battenkill III that just quit me. The arbor seems to have "frozen" and I cant get it to turn. Not at all sure what is going on. I dont remember getting any sand or grit in there, but the thing just wont turn. Anyone have any experience with this? Also, does anyone know if these reel are easily taken apart. I dont want to get into it and not be able to get the reel back together. Thanks.

Well, just remember. "WHEN ALL ELSE FAILS, READ THE INSTRUCTIONS"! Get your instruction sheet which came with the reel, and it will TELL you how to disassemble/maintain it. Also, I believe Orvis offers a return/repair policy on the Battenkills if I remember right.
I made a few changes to my old Battenkill multiplier just by reading the instruction sheet.
They are a fairly simple reel, as I recall. I had one of the "complex" designs, a multiplier.

R11 if you don't have the instruction sheet (typical after a year of kicking around on your desk top) check with Bob above (same reel? Copy/mail you one?) or contact Orvis. They're very good at giving you info over the phone. Fred

Yeah, contact Orvis. I don't have the reel anymore. I gave it (including the instructions, exploded view, etc.) to my niece and godchild (along with a fine Orvis rod, and a line to match) as she is taking up flyfishing, even going to the school at LL Bean in a couple of months. Too bad she doesn't live closer, as I could teach her.
(Hint - to fix it, start by REMOVING THE SPOOL!)

I ended up going onto Orvis website and "chatting" to a tech support guy in real time... kinda weird, but really worked. Just like talking to him, but online instead of the phone. He answered my questions, and told me I needed to send it in to the reel repair shop. Licensed tech's would tell me what is wrong, fix it and if it was a manufatures defect, no charge.... we'll see. Ill post in a few weeks when I get the reel back... better be here in time for Alaska!

Thanks for the offer, still might work. If I get word from Orvis they want a bunch to fix my reel, maybe we can work something out.
