They are priced very nicely $ 170 to $ 215 for the largest model. Looks tempting to me

Oh, Boy, the "thrifty" one is thinking about spending a few bucks. Come watch the moths fly out of his wallet when he counts out the money!

Hey, stupervisor - I'll bet that shop owner didn't have any Loon reels in the store, either, and was recommending and pushing what he had on display!

bob,
check out link, scroll down to new stuff.
http://www.schmidtoutfitters.com/schmidt_new/fly%20shop.asp
he carries all the other loon products, ray is very cautious when it comes to dumping "new" gear on customers. he would rather lose a sale then make you un-happy.

I just may do it anyway due to a special offer I have received from Loon I can by the largest model 11-12 LA for $ 130. Will give me another large spey reel but a light one.
For the record you do not need a very expensive disc drag reel for steelhead or salmon, I caught many steelhead and salmon in the early 80s with my two Martin multiplier fly reels cost of each was $ 30- $ 40. Great cheap reels which I still have as backups. My be worth something some day heck I even I have initials carved in them.

you may want to check out the new harris reels, jack charlton is involved with the design and manufacture of these babies. his reels were the BOMB before sa bought him out.
heard the price point was going to be very nice $200 range.
saw a couple protos at a certain n. michigan fly shop, very very sweet. its your dough so spend it wisely dude.

One other (very good) alternative is the "G. Loomis Venture" reels. Save for the US, they sell under their 'reel name' Shamono (sp?)
EXCELLENT reel, very well constructed ... and price point is $100.00. Turning into 'the reel of choice' for many of the best local 'fly guys' here on the Rogue.
A couple of the fellows (October trip to the Harrison/Vedder in BC) were using the #7 and had zero problems handling salmon in the 20++ pound range on their single handers.

Will check out the Harris but to get the Lochsa at the special price I have to pull the trigger prior to 3/31 its a special offer
Or I could resurrect one of my old early 80s (not used since 85) steelhead/salmon fly reels, multipliers too the Martins are, only problem they will not hold a spey line, but maybe a scandi head with 50-100 yds of gel spun backing. They are in good working order though had them reworked a couple of years ago by the factory.
Just looking at these reels brings tears to my old eyes of the great michigan steelheading they gave me in the early 80s, the days that are no more and will never be again, rivers full of chrome, uncrowded, no guides, parade of DBs, solitary blue ribbon fishing, its sad yes sad indeed.
Any other recommendations on cheap 100-200 spey reels

i have found many parts and pieces from those 72's in the big man and pm streambeds.
last fall found 1/2 a reel, the side with the crank. wonder what the story was behind that???
they work but man are they harsh, especially on kings.

These reels landed many salmon and steelhead over the years and only once one fell apart on me while fighting a steelhead on the PM
Envision me in the middle of the river on cold spring day, the river a little high, in the Clay Banks area. Hooked a nice one in the middle of the fight the MG-72 (black reel) multiplier decides to jam, I take off the face plate while still playing the fish, believe I lost a part of the gear into the river, still played the fish though and almost got him in, but lost him at the end.
Had to walk back to car and get the back up reel to continue fishing, always have a back up.
Could not order the Lochsa reel from Loon, they did not respond to my fax order, phone message, or email, so I guess it is a dead issue.
Have to get another cheap spey reel or another spool for my Marryat MR-9 ($ 125) they are hard to find now.
If any one knows of a cheap spey reel 11-12 under $ 200 let me know.

Most 'interesting' to see the 'old price' vs. 'new price.' Market gotten 'flooded' with too many reels in that price range? Suspect so.
That said, Hal e bay search for the 'Reddington reels.' I've several and all very good; only thing you have to watch is to use VERY LITTLE oil/grease when you lube them up.
Other than that, pound nails with them.

Fred, you've got THAT right! BTW, I turned BG on to the "firesale" when they had the "big closeout"! The "thrifty one" bought one, then asked what to do for "spare parts" if he ever had problems?? I almost bust a gut laughing. I then told him if he was THAT concerned that, at THAT price, to BUY TWO of 'em!!!
My fireale Redington does a yeoman's job every time I use it, and that is frequently!
Incidentally, THAT's the whole story of how I met Hal on the internet!

fred,
the reason behind the price change is that loop no longer sells them, you buy them straight fropm the maker. loop was behind the high retail price, since the break up between loop and danielsson (maker of the reels)Loop decided to have some made in china and they too have lowered their price for an inferior product. the danielssons are made in sweden always have been always will be, the swedes are darn good craftsmen.IMHO

Stu, how are they inferior? Don't own a loop reel (price thing for me) but just because they were made in China doesn't mean they changed the design ... or did they? Fred

they did change the design very much, danielsson had the patent on the original loops. also heard from an oregon reel repair guy that the new loops are not as reliable as the old danielsson's.
not too fond of all our stuff being made in china, has to do with them backing n. vietnam and n korea. i would rather not get started on politics and our enimies, also china helped iran build nuke facilities. nice allies in trade eh???
sorry bud but the subject of our current view on our trade allies really stinks.

The obvious answer to the "princess" should have been, "Only THREE more!" Then she would understand that you're really SACRIFICING by only getting one!
AND she will already be prepared for the next time you mention a new reel.
Boy, you guys NEVER learn how to handle the wife. It's a good thing you are not into expensive stuff like good shotguns!

Well I did not mention the new waders on my mind yet, nothing else good to go on everything else, flys, lines, rods, reels etc.

Have to agree with you there; JD Jones just got a set of their new design. Very impressive looking kit. The 'old design' was also a cracker-jack if only 'plane-jane' looks.
Anyone ever meet somone with DB breathables with a 'bad thing to say?'
