The Sage XP line of rods are my very fav. .... save for the cost of the bloody things. I want to get a similar 'fast action' rod, but not at that kind of moola. (Not a "thrifty Hal thing" but I have a new custom Gary Anderson 13-9 seven weight under construction so I've already "got some explaining to do.")
Recommendations for a similar 'fast action' 10 foot 8wt would be appreciated.

Well, Lucy, I don't know if this will help wit' your 'splainin', but check out the Redington line. The CPS and CPX(?) series both have 10 for 8 weight rods. They're rated "fast" but there's fast and then there's fast.
The CPS is $279 and the other is $199. The problem as I see it is the length-- 10 foot is not a rod you'll find in economy series...so you go from cheap-but-good to a little more expensive.
I have cast neither rod, nor a rod in either series, so I can't vouch for 'em.
If I were to pick a good, inexpensive, fast 8-weight, I'd probably look really hard at the Pflueger Trion, but it's only 9 feet.

"Lucy?" Keith, Keith, Keith ... what ever shall we do with you? 10' is the preference, but 9' is the minimum. Will give the rod a 'Google.'
Fred
Interesting; lots of 'hits,' but none actually discribe the 'rod action.' All are just a re-play of what's on the Plug. corporate web site.

Fred, check out the "Lefty Kreh" series of rods. I believe their 10 footer is a "Fast action", and it was available in 8 wt last time I looked.
I have a 7 weight 10 foot single hander (a Redington RS2) that seems to be fast. I tried it, and like it. I HAVE used an 8-wt line on the rod, and it doesn't seem to overly stress it. Works fine! (And has accounted for steelies and big browns up to 10 lbs.) No big ones hooked on it YET!

Fred-- If you haven't dropped the dime on this, check out the Cabela's LST rod. They have a 9-9 in 8 weight and one in 6 I believe...for $170.
I just took delivery of an 8-3 for a 3 weight that is unbelievably fast...much faster than a 7-6 for a 3 St Croix I sold before it.
Still haven't compared the GLX and Pflueger; will do so after it stops raining. I might melt otherwise.

Yeah, Fred, I have one of the older Cabela Large Arbors, and the drag is among the lowest inertia on start up of all brands tested in a magazine that did that sort of thing. And the reel has held up beautifully for me. Love it. It's been a very good reel for me, too!

Ok Bobster, put the bottle down and step back ... how did you get us from 8wt rods to fly reels?

Well, Fred, we were talking about rods.... and you NEED a matching reel, of course. (That is, you do unless you're like some "economically prudent" folks hereabouts! )
Anyway, if you've got the Cabelas Fly Fishing catalog open, might as well check out the reels while you're at it.

Actually the Cabelas 'combos' are a pretty good deal. Got one of their 3wt's and was VERY pleased with the set up. Fred

I don't know a ton about fly rods, but last spring I bought my dad a 4 wt from ECHO that claimed to be "fast" action and it delivered pretty well. They have a 10' 8 wt on this site for MSRP $169.95. I haven't seen the 8 wt, but I can say that the 4wt action was as promised on the web site. For the money I am considering buying the 10' 6 wt for spring lakes and summer steelhead use around here.
